Description
As #WingedWednesday is back again, I chose to draw a bat. I think they are cute and we should love them more. Especially the fruit bats, who are so ravenous for sweet fruit. What is your favorite weird creature?Related content

Wow the amount of details you put into the wings puts my work to shame. What an adorable Flappy McDogface.

This so sweet . We have a lot of fruit bats in our part of Australia. They can be very unpopular with some people.

Honestly, apart from the huge spiders (and a couple of other things actually trying to kill you) I think Australia is one of the most wonderful place on the planet.

Yes. It is a great country. We came here from the cold North East of England many years ago.
Fruit bats can be a nuisance to the farmers and, at the moment a small town is inundated with them - roosting in the trees in the park and trees around the neighbourhood. Unfortunately they carry what can be a deadly disease so they are not very popular there either. They are a protected species so the locals are not allowed to scare them away. We recently had an extreme heatwave, with temperatures in excess of 40C. The poor bats were falling from the trees through heat exhaustion. It was very sad. Hundreds died.

I've seen online that the heatwave seems to be an ongoing business still. Is it getting any better now, or are my sources right and it's still a huge problem at this moment?
I can imagine the bats would be a nuisance for the local farmers since they feed off fruit... but deadly disease? We're not talking about rabies here, right? In Europe people usually fear touching bats because they are afraid they might bite; local ones feed off animal blood, so they could carry rabies. But fruit bats are a totally different story...

They are still having a heat wave down South. We are thousands of kilometers away from that though. Our heatwave subsided and we have just been through a huge flood disaster which was caused by a monsoon trough which didn't seem to want to move on . The dam rose from 50% to 250% in 5 days so the dam gates had to be opened. Bats should be OK in this situation, but much of the other wildlife has been drowned along with cattle etc.
Thousands of people's homes have been devastated here.
Fruit Bats are also known as Flying Foxes:

Whoa... How come I never hear about this in European news. I would really like to get more world-wide reports on this kind of things, it sounds terrible, and people knowing about it could result in sending some sort of supplies and help. I am really sorry to hear about this, it really sounds like a natural disaster. I hope you weren't affected directly by this. So much for 'there is no global warming' fans. I hope they change their minds about climate change, this doesn't sound like a normal seasonal occurrence.
