Description
Joseph Bringas (Greek: Ὶωσῆφ Βρίγγας) was an important Byzantine eunuch official in the reigns of Emperor Constantine VII (r. 945–959) and Emperor Romanos II (r. 959–963), serving as chief minister and effective regent during the latter. Having unsuccessfully opposed the rise of Nikephoros Phokas to the imperial throne in 963, he was exiled to a monastery, where he died in 965.Joseph had many enemies: general Nikephoros Phokas, John Tzimiskes, Empress-dowager Theophano. But his most dangerous and powerful enemy was his predecessor and rival, another eunuch Basil Lekapenos . Only with the help of Basil, Nikephoros and Tzimiskes could overthrow the power of Joseph Bringas.
Upon his accession, Romanos II dismissed Basil and favoured Joseph Bringas, instead, who assumed Basil's positions of paradynasteuon, protos, and parakoimomenos. This began a fierce rivalry and even hatred between the two men.
Basil remained on the sidelines for the duration of the reign, but when Romanos died in early 963, his sons Basil II and Constantine VIII were underage, and a struggle for the throne erupted. Basil sided with the distinguished general Nikephoros Phokas against Bringas. Basil armed his numerous attendants—some 3,000 according to the sources—and with the urban mob attacked Bringas and his supporters and seized control of the city and the ports. Bringas sought sanctuary in the Hagia Sophia, while Basil mobilized the imperial dromon and other vessels to Chrysopolis, where Phokas awaited with his army. Phokas entered the city, and was crowned senior emperor as guardian of Romanos II's young sons. As a reward for his role in Phokas' elevation to the throne, Basil was restored to his old post as parakoimomenos and received the new exalted rank of proedros (fully proedros tes Synkletou, "president of the Senate"). Bringas was banished first to his native Paphlagonia, and then to the monastery of Asekretis at Pythia near Nicomedia, where he died in 965.
Bringas is described as feminine from the outside, but brave in nature, passionate in deeds, zealous, harsh and very proud.
"The owner of the seal affixed to at least two communications to the Bulgarian capital is Joseph, patrikios, praipositos, imperial protospatharios and imperial sakellarios. It can generally be dated to the mid-10th century. An individual holding these positions in the Byzantine administration is known from this time. He is Joseph Bringas, the famous courtier and eunuch. His name is first mentioned in 945: We find the following information for the year 945 in Theophanes Continuatus."The God-loving and beauty-loving basileus Constantine found the patrikios and praipositos Joseph, a man of a disposition similar to his (he was judicious in the state affairs and his wit was quicker than a bird's) and initially appointed him sakellarios and later drungarios of the fleet, which he entrusted to his full control."
The name of the same Joseph is later reported prior to the death of Constantine VII in 959 and in connection with the ascension of Romanos II (959-963): "On his deathbed, the basileus appointed his son Romanos autokrator and entrusted him to the care of the patrikios and praipositos Joseph, whom he charged by oath to protect his son using his great experience."
Later on, the parakoimomenos Joseph Bringas held key positions in the imperial government during the reign of Romanos II and after his death, but when Nikephoros II Phokas (963-969) ascended the throne, he exited the stage of history. Joseph held the titles patrikios, praipositos and imperial protospatharios (bestowed on eunuchs) and the office of imperial sakellarios on the present seal. In the context of the above events, he must have held these positions immediately after 945. His correspondence was received in Preslav precisely in this capacity."

"Joseph Bringas was a eunuch with a brilliant career under the reign of Constantine VII (905-959 A.D.). Originally a slave (he was not a Greek), he belonged to the same family as one of the emperor’s enemies and after noticing his worth, the emperor had him castrated, a mark of honour at the time. Bringas was then able to gain access to thehighest ranking positions of the state including prime minister, chancellor, and head of the Senate."
-- The various types and roles of eunuchs in the Byzantine Empire.
Athens University, Greece
"He (Leo) inevitably comments negatively about eunuchs: Constantine Gongyles, who led the failed expedition to Crete in 949, is a eunuch of the bedchamber, an effeminate fellow from Paphlagonia" (7.4-5); he has John Tzimiskes in a speech (40.3) call Joseph Bringas "an effeminate fellow, whose very sex is doubtful, an artificial woman. . . ." In describing eunuchs who are successful Leo comments "although he happened to be a eunuch" ([66.1, 94.6-7]) or "although a eunuch" ([107.20])."
-- The History of Leo the Deacon: Byzantine Military Expansion in the Tenth Century By Leo (the Deacon)
"In contrast to Leo the Deacon, the chronicle of Theophanes Continuatus is known for its praise of the eunuch Joseph Bringas.
He characterizes Joseph as shrewd, upright, faithful, swifter than an eagle in opposing political injustices, pious, just, even-handed, in short a paragon. He is also described as having a kind, upright and vigilant mind, and as being earnest and alert. "
-- The Eunuch in Byzantine History and Society By Shaun Tougher
Finally I want to say that he was not old and sick (he was unlikely to have been more than 30 years old when he died, most likely from poison), ugly or stupid as he is described in historical fiction. All these negative descriptions of the eunuch Joseph Bringas come from those who have no idea about the Byzantine state of affairs for the eunuchs and those who are negative about the eunuchs.
In the Byzantine palace near the emperor only the most beautiful and talented eunuchs could serve. In Byzantium they were brought from the Caucasus, Persia, Syria, Paphlagonia, and their beauty and purity were compared to the angels.

I can't avert my gaze from the subtle contours of his body underneath the tunic... sensuous, but simultaneously chaste, and, somehow, sacred, like a relic hidden under the reliquary that is the holy veil of his clothes... his body remains hidden from the sight of common's eyes.

Aw, thank you
Yes, his beauty is sensual but in the same time very pure. It's not a womanly beauty, it's an angelic beauty.

For what? And why you ask when thousand of artist paint and draw women.
The art of antiquity and modernity does not lack the image of real women. But there are practically no images of eunuchs, beautiful eunuchs. No one draws them, no one knows about them, although they played a huge role in the history of mankind. Thus we want to defend minor groups whom the majority unjustly ignores.

I like your art, but I found a strange when some of your drawings with feminine features on their face, but in reality it is a man instead of a woman.
You do very good work, drawing + color.

I see. Thank you~
In our works we depict not simple men, but androgynous men or eunuchs, who physiologically develop feminine and tender features because of lack of testosterone hormone, also, large hips, sometimes breast, high voice, but unlike women, the eunuchs have very tall height and very long legs and hands, they have smooth skin (acne and other skin problems are related with the harmonies, and the eunuchs do not have puberty+testosterone, if they castrated as a prepuberty boys).
Therefore, if the boy was handsome and he became a eunuch, he became even more beautiful, and therefore in the ancient world they were admired and compared to angels (in the lives of saints and chronicles of Byzantium). Women were never compared to angels in those times, because angels were always men. Some Byzantine authors called the angels "celestial eunuchs", and the palace eunuchs of the emperor called "earthly angels".
But people know little about this. Therefore, we depict eunuchs, whom people have forgotten. We just want to return the forgotten beauty)

"feminine and tender features" [...] "smooth skin"; "if the boy became a eunuch, he became even more beautiful", "earthly angels"...
SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...................... I think I'm gonna faint with such sheer beauty and purity... Oh my, they are so exquisite... Makes me want to be one of them, and lie together as lovers with one of these angels in the flesh...

Ok, here is some our art with women.
But I don't understand, why we should draw women, if in the world you can find a huge number of talented artists who paint high-quality paintings with beautiful women. There is too much women in the art, but the beautiful androgynous men and eunuchs actually do not.
Can you find someone besides us who draws good-quality paintings with beautiful eunuchs?

I wanted to see in fact in your beautiful art, more shape in the breast for your characters supposed to be women, but are in fact androgynous.

Why is it necessary, if ALL artists draws women, but nobody draws beautiful eunuchs and androgynous men?
This is discrimination against eunuchs and androgynous on the one hand, and a sick addiction for people of only female sex with a sexual appearance... I have nothing against women, but I just want justice for other non-female and non-gender binary people.
I think that this is very important for the truth, which everyone forgets. The truth is that there are beautiful and feminine people, but they are not women.
You know that Alexander the Great loved Bagoas more than anyone else, more than his wife Roxane. Roxane was beautiful, but Bagoas was more beautiful and better in everything, and he was eunuch.
Similarly, Emperor Theodosius passionately fell in love with the beautiful eunuch Chrysaphius more than his beautiful wife Aelia Eudocia, who was the most beautiful woman of her time. But Chrysaphius was exceptional and greatest.
But you will not find images of Chrysaphius from other artists and writers, but the image of all these women in paintings and books is in abundance.
To me it's sad...

Both beautiful and dangerously intelligent! He must have truly been a great rival to Basil, but they're both so charming and elegant it would have been wonderful to see them in action against one another. Two beautiful angels fighting for a single goal.

True... he was at the same leve of Basil. However, from the deepest rivalry the most truthful love can sprout, so I like to imagine they were lovers who met secretly, but, under the eyes of the Empire, they forged the unsuspected image of rivals

Yeah, he is beautiful and dangerous at the same time!
On the other hand, he has a noble, just and generous heart, I admire his personality. And yes, he is a worthy opponent for Basil.

Thank you!!) Yes, he is like angel, beautiful, pure, androgynous, pious, powerful. I hope that his example (his appearance, mind, persistence, his femininity did not prevent him from being strong and courageous) will inspire many eunuchs and people like eunuchs...

The feminine appearance certainly doesn’t prevent a person from being strong and courageous. But it often prevents other people from recognize that. You need to possess these qualities in plenty to accept yourself as a feminine man in a society that considers such men to be defective and deprived of virtues. Thank you! Your art is really a remedy for a person who suffers because of his femininity and who is having difficulty accepting himself all his life ...

I understand, it's hard... I myself experienced a huge obstacle from the society when I painted and wrote about eunuchs as good and worthy of respect persons. But I am glad that I was able to raise this topic, and I am happy that due to this many people have learned a lot good about eunuchs.
Yes, and it's very sad when a man is denied his masculinity only because of his feminine appearance or attributes.
Worse, the eunuchs are revealed in virtuous qualities, are such good qualities as kindness, generosity, compassion and wisdom connected with the presence of entire genital organs? Such people are just fools if they think so.
The eunuchs are even more close to spiritual qualities than ordinary men and women.
In our world, eunuchs need to have great willpower to establish themselves, not to be ashamed of themselves, and to live in harmony with their bodies.
And I dream and hope that it will be at least to a small extent due to positive knowledge and art about them.
