A map depicting the halo universe. I used this map (i.imgur.com/tsDej9B.png ) for most information.

Key:
Covenant= magenta
UNSC= blue

Funny thing about this map is that "Galactic North," or the direction of the galactic center, is illustrated on the bottom right-hand corner of the map, appearing southeast. Technically there is no "north" or "south" in the galaxy, but the norm in most illustrations. On the map to the right I rotated the map 135 degrees counterclockwise so it would be facing the Galactic Center.

Since the Covenant Empire is outside the boundaries of the map provided by I took the liberty to design its borders. If you look closely the shape of the Covenant empire is resembles the Persian Empire. I chose this shape because the ancient Spartans were at war with the Persians for centuries, and it only seemed appropriate for the future UNSC Spartans to fight the future alien substitutes of the Persian Empire.

I also tried to make parallels between the Covenant species and the various peoples the Persian Empire subjugated:
Achaemenids= San'Shyuum (Prophets)
Medians= Sangheili (Elites)
Lydians= Lekgolo (Hunters)
Babylonians= Yamne'e (Drones/Buggers)
Egyptians= Unngoy (Grunts)
Bactrians= Kig-Yar (Jackals/Skirmishers)
Scythians= Jiralhanae (Brutes)
