Description
As i told you, i finally began studying some photographies, and here is my first attempt at making some serious realistic digital art!Ever since i began drawing, i never tried copying stuff and never used references in my works, because i got bored quickly and couldn't bring myself to copy anything: i just wanted to invent stuff rather than copying it.
But now things have changed, as my new goal is to be able to create realism from my imagination, so that i can use it to improve my comic, and this new goal gave me the mental strength to finally be able to actually copy something and study it!
Needless to say, i learned more by drawing this eye than i ever did by reading books on the subject.
Just as i thought, copying (which means studying) can be a great help, because a book can teach you only so many things, the rest depends on your observation and studies!
I also think this will be a great help because i can finally make use of my quite decent photographic memory:
my plan is to copy as many photos as i can, so that over time i will learn the principles behind these/ memorize the process of drawing various parts and be able to create realism from imagination.
So expect quite a few more of these studies: my commitment to drawing is now at its peak, i'm making the final leap and i will begin studying realism and studying drawing harder than ever!
And yes, that means also copying stuff to learn much quicker than by randomly doodling imagined stuff.
This one took about 30 mins, i hope i'll get faster as i keep doing these and as i get used to these realism techniques!
I'm not that satisfied with this first study becuase i changed too many things and couldn't reproduce it exactly as it is, but i'm glad that i could finally bring myself to start copying photos and i feel like i already learned a great deal more about a realistic eye, and as soon as i feel comfortable with black and white i'll switch to colors

A very done piece, just a few minor alterations and I think you'll have cracked it;
- every where the face creases, very faint crease lines remain
- possibly try using the eye lash brush for the eye brow, as it came out very thick
- don't be afraid of blemishes (spot next to the eye)
Perfection is a harsh idea, as you want it to be immaculate, but perfection lays in the imperfections. Hope this helps, you're doing great, keep up the good work

Thank you so much!
And thank you also for your constructive critique, which i really appreciate!
Here is the reply i gave to another user, regarding the difference between realism and photorealism (i was after realism in this first piece, which is why i haven't worked on textures and creases ... yet xD)
[Yep, the skin is too smooth, but there's a reason for that: i was mainly doing this exercise just to learn the major principles behind realism, but avoided getting distracted by the little details that make the difference from realism to photorealism (which is why i titled this piece "Realism Digital Painting" rather than "Photorealism Digital Painting")
This is the first time i can actually bring myself to copy something, so i definitely need to get used to this and also to find a nice worflow and set of techniques to achieve nice realistic results, and once i get used to all this i'll try to begin working on photorealism, which means considering all the little details such as skin pores/texture that i'm skipping at the moment, to avoid getting distracted too much by the details rather than focusing on the big picture!]
As for the eyebrows, i totally agree, they are too thick and there isn't as much light space between its hair as there should have been, i'll try to do better next time *-*
And of course i'll keep working to improve, thank you once again for your constructive critique!

Don't worry about it mate, I'd sooner give constructive criticism than say, 'great' or 'amazing' as those sorts of comments help no-one.

I love the eye, it has that glow and shine to it that really makes it pop especially with the eye brows having such wonderful detail. I only feel a little lost on the skin, it seems almost too smooth, like a babies, which feels a little off when looking at an adult. A lovely piece none the less, and a job well done.
