Description
Warning: For those of you with no sense of humor, there's nothing I can do to help you.I am so going to hell for this... or reincarnated into a slug or something. I got into a religious debate on the forums again. And when I asked the person if they believe in the Juedo-Christian God, what reason do they have for not believing in the Gods of all the other cultures, I thought up this joke. As soon as I was off the forum, I went right to work on this one. I really should have gone to bed an hour ago, but I just had to finish. For those of you who are about to ask, the Deity appearing is Shiva. Thus the guy fist-pumping on the last panel would be a Hindu.

This is one of the many valid and insightful responses to Pascal's wager. I always wonder why theists (although, to be fair, I've only ever heard Christians use it) continue to use this very flimsy argument...again and again! I like this answer (what if we're all faithful to the WRONG god/s), but the one I generally use (because I don't want them to think I would actually believe in ANY god/s) is the "you can't fake faith" rebuttal. Essentially, the argument goes: you can't convince yourself to believe in something, especially after you've already reasoned yourself away from it (I can't go back to believing in Santa any more than I could the Judeo-Christian god). Just as a practice, try standing on the edge of a cliff. Then, convince yourself that gravity doesn't exist. Believe it. Then walk off that cliff. I bet you can't make yourself believe that gravity doesn't exist to the extent that your faith in a gravity-less world allows you to walk off that cliff. In any case, your belief in the god/s would be fake, and if the god/s (specifically the Judeo-Christian god) can tell when you're coveting thy neighbor's wife (or whatever), s/he/it can certainly tell if you're faking your faith. And the punishment follows.

Haha, yes I know these debates all too well. I get into them myself. If only this would really happen! People can get so caught up in it, but the truth is we will never know. Multi-faceted diamond theory folks- everyone is both right and wrong because it all depends on how you see the diamond.

I think a prism is more apt, as diamonds represent materialism . . . but yes, I believe in this.

Fair enough. I don't see diamonds as a material thing because I see so many non material applications like cutting tools, but same idea.

But they're the ultimate symbol of jewelry snobs, too. Plus a lot of first-world abuse towards the third world with mining them.
Whereas prisms are mostly associated with science and light.

What do you think about these "chocolate diamonds" they're peddling nowadays?

Oh yes, I have many a large piece of amethyst around. I love it in it's natural state. Bismuth is also lovely.
I couldn't care either way... beyond that some of the research is helpful for my funeral plans. I want to be made into one when I die XD

Then again, purple quartz is much less expensive.
LOL. Well, we certainly seem to be taking up a lot of space with "traditional" burials. Then again, cremation and the like take a whole lot of energy.

Depends where you look. I happen to be blessed enough to live near a crystal dealer who gets his stuff in bulk... and is happy to sell off the slightly less pretty stuff fairly cheap. I'm hoping he will start stocking bismuth soon before I cave and order a ton from the net. XD
True, true, being turned into a diamond is pretty energy heavy. Other options I've considered is being cremated and packed into fireworks but the legality there is iffy, and sky burials... but my country has made them illegal alas. :/ If you are not familiar with sky burials, they involve hacking the body up and feeding it to vultures.

Lucky! My dad has one foot in the jewelry business, I guess I should ask him to sniff around more.
Aw, sky burials are awesome! Maybe you should move somewhere late in life where they allow them or arrange transport after death . . . though that'd be pretty expensive, not to mention red tape intensive.

You should! I'm always stalking around for mineral and fossil dealers with good prices. XD
And lol yeah... they are practiced in Tibet... I suspect it would be a huge legal issue... so my request is to become diamond, fireworks or art

Actually, there's quite a vast field of study related to why other "deities" are logically unlikely to exist, especially in comparison to God as described by a Judeo-Christian view. Of course, it's difficult to debate with anyone due to emotional predispositions toward one belief or another.
By the way, I know it's merely a joke, I'm just sayin'.

Listen, I'm making an apologetics deviation on why Yahweh is not comparable to Vishnu, Wotan, Ra, Zeus, etc.
Yahweh (the Christian God) is not described as having physical characteristics- unlike the god of pretty much every other religion in the entire world. God is described as being transcendant, all-powerful, supernatural, all-loving, etc, but not as having four arms, a beard, three heads, etc.
Anyway, I'm making a deviation explaining this kind of thing.

It's a joke saying that Christians and atheists are wrong, and Buddhists are right. That's not supposed to be the Judeo-Christian god.
...If you think about it, there's just as much chance as Buddhists being right about gods as everybody else. Makes you think, huh?

Cephas-Caradoc In reply to Dyiad [2012-03-16 22:42:55 +0000 UTC]
I know it's not the Judaeo-Christian God, it's Shiva, the Hindu goddess, right? Buddhists, as far as I know, are non-theistic. Buddhism is more of a philosophy than a religion.
Also, although it makes me think, I realize that all these false deities (e.g. Vishnu, Ra, Horus, Zeus, Wotan, etc.) are all false because they do not compare at all to Yahweh. Their qualities are fundamentally different. It's like comparing the builder of a house to a fictional three-headed dog.

If I may engage in polite debate, I would disagree. You are coming from the point that yahweh is not a false deity. To me, a more correct analogy would be comparing a unicorn herder to a dragon rider.

Yahweh is God. You might not believe in the Christian God, Yahweh, but do you at least accept the possibility of a supernatural creator?

Dyiad In reply to Cephas-Caradoc [2012-03-19 22:49:25 +0000 UTC]
I accept the slim possibility that there might be one, but from what I have seen, I do not believe in a supernatural being that would fit the term of "god."
If I may ask you a slightly related question: if you were shown absolute proof that there was no gods nor goddesses, would you change your position?

Cephas-Caradoc In reply to Dyiad [2012-03-19 23:08:28 +0000 UTC]
What "proof" could possibly show that God doesn't exist? I would probably just analyze the proof thoroughly.
