Description
A tutorial about the basics of needle tatting. For the Get Crafty Contest (but I really hope it's useful to someone).Second part of the tutorial ->
-------------
I'm not a tatting pro, I learned it from the web. This tutorial shows the very basics of needle tatting, like I use to do it. If you have another method, feel free to tell me, I'm always willing to learn
It's also my first tutorial. Helpful critiques are welcome.

Hah, awesome. I didn't know tatting could be done with a needle - I've only seen the shuttle kind. I'll have to try this out when I've got some extra time and patience!
Just reading through the tutorial, I've only got two small critiques.
1) The font, while not totally difficult to read, isn't the easiest to read, either. This may also just be a personal preference - I like simple fonts for instructions.
2) Some of the re-sized images are quite blocky. A different re-sizing algorithm might produce less pixelization, and make what's going on in the pictures more clear.
And a question: You're using cotton crochet thread, yes? What size? I'm guessing #10 crochet thread - since that seems to be the most easily available - but just wanted to double check.
I'm definitely looking forward to trying this out.

Thanks I'd love to see what you create. Maybe then you can tell me what else to improve on the tutorial afterwards
Yes, I already got the critique about the font once. So it must be true. I'll keep that in mind.
Unfortunately, I don't get the algorithm resize thingy. Would you be so kind and explain it to me? The tutorial was made with SerifDraw Plus. I also have Gimp and IrfanView to resize photos.
Hm, I don't know for the crochet thread in the US. The package band says that it's for size 2 crochet (2mm), according to my book that's a size 4 crochet in the US (but according to the web, that's even smaller than a size 1 US crochet ) And it's 100% cotton. But looking at the pictures I found on Google for #10 crochet thread, I'm pretty sure it's that one.

This looks like I may have to give it a try
I have to say though that the font makes it a little difficult to read at times.

That would make me happy
And you might have a point there with the font. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll think about it if I ever get to make another tutorial

Wonderful tutorials, thank you so much! It's kind of like miniature crochet isn't it?

It might look similar, but there are some differences.
The most obvious would be, that you use a hook for crochet, but a needle or a shuttle for tatting.
The second difference is, that crochet works are made of loops, so you can pull on the thread and the whole work will disband. Tatting works are made of knots and it's more work to untie them than to knot them (quite annoying if you made a mistake somewhere).
And thank you for the compliment

Ah yes, I see what you mean. It looks fascinating anyway, and such pretty results! And you're most welcome

Oh man, I have always wanted to try needle tatting, but up until this point I had never found a tutorial that made ant sense to me.
I am definitely going to try this one I finish my current project.

I can't promise anything But if you should have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them.
And I'd be glad to see the outcome.

That make me really happy.
I saw your tatting flower and I really think it's unique. Just the idea of making a 3D-flower never would have come to my mind.
I added it to the #Tatting -group's favorites. Please accept it. For me, your flower takes tatting to a new level.

Agreed I find that some of my best work happens when I throw my plans out of the window and just go with the flow
Although if truth be told some of my worst work also happens around that time

digikijo In reply to Magical525 [2013-06-04 19:06:24 +0000 UTC]
Would be awful if the best works would only happen without a plan and vice versa :/

Not only - I did say "some of my best work" , which therefore means that the rest of my best work was planned before hand
But yes it would be awful if the best works only happened without a plan and vv

So, how long is the needle you have and where can I get one that length?
š: 0 ā©: 1
digikijo In reply to Charlene-Art [2013-06-02 06:30:00 +0000 UTC]
The needle I have is around 12,5cm/4.92" long and I bought it in a regular crafts store

Cool! What exactly is the definition of tatting by the way?

digikijo In reply to Charlene-Art [2013-05-21 18:00:15 +0000 UTC]
Oh, there you got me It's a lace making technique. Usually, a Shuttle is used, needle tatting is just a variation.
Doilies and edgings are very common works, but tatted jewelry is getting more and more popular.
I hope this answers your question

Oooh, I need to learn this to make a border for my medieval dress!

That's why I learned it to begin with

But according to some web sources that I just looked up, it seems that it was invented in early 19th century...

A misunderstanding I learnt it for my medieval dress too, that's what I meant.

MirachRavaia In reply to digikijo [2013-05-22 20:13:23 +0000 UTC]
No, I understood what you meant. I just wondered if I should use it for my dress, as it seems that it's not historically accurate to use it...

Ah, well, I suppose that depends on what role you want to incorporate. Poor ppl sure had simple dress without any deco. The richer ppl were, the more likelier their dress had some deco.
But maybe Tablet Weaving is the right technique for your dress?

Thank you, I know tablet weaving. I wanted a lace or embroidery for my dress... maybe I'll still try this, it looks quite close to a lace

Tried to learn shuttle tatting from a video tutorial, but couldn't figure out how it works. Needle tatting on the other hand was pretty easy to learn.
