Description

Ported to OBJ from the low poly model originally created by James Smith, Bruce Baker, and their friends on the original Virtual Navy team for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2) and since modded by others.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

USS Wolverine (IX-64) was the lead ship in a class of two training carriers operated by the United States Navy (USN) during World War II.  Both she and her sister ship USS Sable (IX-81) were originally paddlewheel steamers--

(sound of brakes squealing loudly)

That's right.  Both were originally paddlewheel steamers, tourist excursion boats, that were purchased by the USN for conversion.  You see, they were big enough for a simple carrier conversion, and given the wartime situation the USN simply couldn't afford to spare a real aircraft carrier for training purposes (all of them were needed in the field).  The conversion in both cases was fairly simple, with all of the topside structures removed and replaced with a very simple continuous flight deck and control island.  There was no provision for a hangar deck, aircraft lifts, or anything else like what you would normally find on a real aircraft carrier.  Both ships were essentially slow-moving carrier-sized landing and takeoff platforms to be used only for flight training purposes.  Both were assigned to the Great Lakes, and both quietly did their job as designed all during World War II.  When all was said and done both Wolverine and Sable had been responsible for the successful training of almost 18,000 USN pilots.  After the war both were quickly disposed of and eventually scrapped, as the USN had plenty of carriers by that time and could afford to spare a few for training purposes.  To this day USS Wolverine and USS Sable hold the distinction of being the only paddlewheel-powered aircraft carriers ever operated by any navy in the world in the 20th century, as well as being the only freshwater (inland lake only) aircraft carriers ever built during the same time period.  Both also received awards for their wartime service, so there you go.  To find out more about USS Wolverine and USS Sable, two of the most unique aircraft carriers ever built to date, follow the links below.

This is a straight port, with no changes by me save to remove the backfaces from the stacks so their textures wouldn't look so weird when used with XNALara XPS. Two different models are included.  One is of a Wolverine type paddlewheel carrier in its actual wartime configuration with a plain wooden flight deck, and the other uses a custom fan texture to paint the flight deck in wartime blue, if for some insane reason you want to send an unarmed paddlewheel training carrier into combat.

This is a fairly simple model, made back in the day when people were simply glad to get any kind of warship model for CFS2 use, and so its quality is about the same as the CivIV warships I've ported.  It's a free model, though, and it's the only one of this particular subject I've yet found that doesn't kill you on the poly count.  Beggars can't be choosers. (grin)

This is not my model.  All I did was port it to OBJ for you and fix the backfacing issue with the stacks as described above.  Please credit Bruce Baker, James Smith, and the rest of the original CFS2 Virtual Navy team if you use this in any of your own 3D projects.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

NOTE - Sable was actually configured a bit differently than Wolverine, but I'm using this low poly model to cover for both ships until I can get higher quality models.

ASIDE - It's hard to believe these days, but these two ships were for real.  You can't make this kind of insane warship up.  That said, they actually worked and did very well at their jobs by all accounts.  I don't know how you might use it but it's there if you need it.  It also makes for one of the most unusual additions to my online C21VN collection.
