Description
Ported to OBJ from the fan created model made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Based on the original fanon design by Eric "Jackill" Kristiansen as published in both his Loki Class Blueprints and in his Jackill's Starfleet Reference Manual Volume III. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
Loki was the "panhandle" single warp engined standard destroyer complement to Excelsior in the post-TMP era, just as Saladin and Larson were to Constitution in the TOS/TAS era (along with their many derivatives and relatives) and their uprated forms would be in the TMP era, and it also anticipates the canon Freedom class frigate of the TNG era. The sheer power of its single transwarp engine allowed it to be far more heavily armed than its predecessors, even though it used a "shorty" version instead of the longer normal one for warp field balance reasons. This also limited its potential range from what it would have been had it been able to use the regular longer version, but that was the only drawback of this otherwise excellent Saladin successor. Starfleet got around the range issue by keeping the bulk of its Lokis on the borders as much as possible while turning over internal Federation patrol duties to its older destroyer classes. Loki did very well all things considered, saw at least three more production blocks across the whole of the post-TMP era (some Trek multiverse threads give it a fourth starter block at the tail end of the TMP era depending on how you date Loki's service entry date), and most of the class minus several in-service losses due to various reasons remained in service through the whole of the TMP/DS9/VOY era.
As with its predecessors Saladin and Larson, there were a number of Loki variants developed and put into Starfleet service across the whole of its service lifetime. I'll let you look those up (or make them up) yourself if you want or need them for whatever reasons.
This is fanon, sadly, but right now it's filling an obvious hole in the Franchise Feddie post-TMP and TNG/DS9/VOY era starship class lineups. When they release or license their own Excelsior generation Starfleet "panhandle" to cover that gap then I'll gladly replace Loki with it. Until then, as the saying goes, Loki rules. (wink)
Live long and prosper.
