Description

Ported to OBJ from the fan-created model made by Wicked Zombie for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Based on the original TOS era Federation design by Franz Joseph Schnaubelt for ye olde Star Fleet Technical Manual (SFTM).  Conjectured TMP era refit by Aridas Sofia with input from Todd Guenther , based on background chatter mentioning Federation class member USS Entente (NCC-2120) by name and hull registry number in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (TMP), and as depicted in both Starship Design (SSD) and the Federation Reference Series (FRS), as well as other later associated classic Trek fanon materials.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

I don't know about you, but seeing Federation this way gave me almost the same kind of thrills when I first saw it in my original mail-order copies of both the Federation Reference Series (FRS) and Starship Design (SSD) back in the day as I got when I first saw TMP itself during its original theatrical run.  It's a logical thing to do with Federation in the TMP era, and the mention in TMP of Entente gave anyone who caught it (and a lot of us did and many more have since) a canon springboard off of which they could come up with something like this.  BTW this is not the only TMP era Feddie dreadnought design out there, although IMHO it comes the closest in both spirit and form to how Federation and her sisters finally made it into the TMP era.  Both Mr. Guenther and Mr. Sofia and their various associates also came up with a convincing backstory for the how and why of this TMP era upgrade that still holds up quite well today, even though all of it is technically still as fanon as it ever was and nothing more.

To make a long story short per their various fanon materials, Federation didn't get upgraded until Starfleet's TMP era linear warp upgrade program was well underway and enough linear warp upgrades and new builds of other Feddie starship classes went into service to cover for their absence, so they could take their turns in drydock being upgraded.  These were tremendously expensive given their particular configurations, so Starfleet began looking at a number of lower cost alternatives along the way (and which also help spur the creation of the subsequent three-track linear warp upgrade program, but I digress).  In the end the linear warp upgrades for the last three Federations got cancelled completely because of financial issues, and depending on whose Trek multiverse thread you go with they either eventually got an alternative and somewhat simplified linear warp upgrade geared more for the exploratory role than as pure warships (my own FFR, aka the Star League conversion per Jackill's); or the last three Federations wound up never getting upgraded in any way, with Starfleet going with a less expensive all-new-build dreadnought class instead (Ascension) and eventually decommissioning the non-upgraded three due to their obsolescence in the TMP era.  That's my take on the uprated TMP era Federation class dreadnought.  You of course have yours, and more power to you.

Live long and prosper!

ASIDE - FYI and IMHO I think Wicked Zombie's TMP era Federation is the best 'effin low-poly model of its subject you're going to find anywhere.  There are higher poly efforts out there, but they don't have his poly count and his still compares very well with theirs ... IMHO.  XD
