Description

A custom model by me created with parts originally created by Rick "p81" Knox, atheorhaven, and Atrahasis for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games by Activision.  Original design by Neale "Pixel Sagas" Davison.  Based on the original Saladin class destroyer design by Franz Joseph Schnaubelt as published in ye olde Franchise licensed Star Fleet Technical Manual (SFTM).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

Cochise started out life during the TOS era as the third and final production block of Saladin class destroyers.  Being the newest they were held back while the prior two blocks, Saladin and Siva, were taken out of service early in the TMP era for full-blown LN-64 based linear warp upgrades.  By the time they came back into service and it was the turn for Cochise Starfleet was running out of money (with a proposal for an LN-60 upgrade and rebuild rejected for the same reason), so they went with the cheap and simple LN-52 upgrade path instead -- which was more or less a simple engine swap and change-out of selected support systems.  By TMP era standards this made them the least capable of Starfleet's destroyer force, but one big advantage gained was that Cochise's new and more robust LN-52 was powerful enough to remove the past tendency of all Starfleet single-engine TOS era "panhandles" to wormhole at high warp (unlike the older but almost identical looking LN-40).  Cochise was also fitted with a variation on the new TMP era deflector system originally developed for the Saladin/Hermes upgrade program, which no longer required the large deflector dish that had been previously mounted at the base of the primary hull.  All ships in the class were upgraded and returned to service rather quickly, given the simplified nature of their particular refits.  In the end the upgraded Cochise class wound up being treated as second class destroyers, i.e. a second tier destroyer force, being sent on missions that weren't deemed worthy of a "proper" LN-64-refitted Starfleet linear warp destroyer, and they spend most of their time serving within Federation space in order to free the newer or upgraded destroyer classes for service on the Federation frontier and other such high-priority locations.  They performed ably in their new roles and continued in Starfleet service for some years beyond the TMP era and into the early 24th century.  None remain with Starfleet by the time the TNG/DS9/VOY era roles around, and none are known to have survived the scrapper's torch.

This is fanon, although it's derived from a canon design (Saladin).  What you do with it is up to you.

Live long and propser!

ASIDE - Schematics for the abandoned Cochise LN-60 upgrade exist, although it's treated differently by different fans and in different threads of the Trek multiverse.  In some of those it's the path that Starfleet follows (having more money in those), and in some that is the path followed for Siva -- again as a cost-cutting upgrade measure.  Whatever works for you.  Remember, Trek is officially a multiverse now.
