Description

NOTE - This is a replacement image (and entry) of a higher quality model than the one I had up before.

--------------------

Ported to OBJ from the fan created model included with the Imperial Germany Mod for Silent Hunter 3 (SH3).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The four vessels of the Bayern class were the last class of battleships to be ordered by the German Imperial Navy (Germania Kaiserlich Marine or GKM in my book) during the World War I era.  These were the equal of the British Royal Navy's Queen Elizabeth class in almost every respect, but gave up a bit of speed to the Queens in exchange for better armor protection.  Their only real failing was that they came into service too late to have any significant impact on the war.  Bayern was completed in July 1916 and her sister Baden in March 1917 - both too late to take part in the legendary Battle of Jutland.  Bayern got to see combat all the same, taking part in Operation Albion against the Imperial Russian Navy in October 1917.  Baden never saw combat.  Both Bayern and Baden were taken to Scapa Flow at war's end, where they were subsequently scuttled to keep them out of the hands of the British, although Baden sank in shallow water due to the successful actions of the British to run her aground first and save her.  She was the only German ship at Scapa Flow that did not sink in deep water, and was eventually raised and studied before being expended as a gunnery target ship during the 1920s.  The wreck of the Bayern would not be raised and scrapped until 1934.  The main postwar legacy of the Bayern class is that it would serve as the starting design basis for what eventually became the Reichkriegsmarine's Bismarck class battleships of World War II.  The other two were never completed and scrapped in their slips after the war.  To find out more about the Bayern class, follow the link below:

This is a straight port, with the only change by me being to replace the guns that wouldn't appear after the mod was installed with suitable ones from my personal stock library of Silent Hunter series parts.  I don't promise that they're entirely accurate or that their placement is entirely correct, but this arrangement seemed to work best with regards to both the model and available reference images.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways.  You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

That said, there are a number of alternate sources out there for good CG models of Bayern.  There's an excellent low-poly effort by stuart277 for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2) that you can find and download at many of the better Flight Simulator series fan add-on sites, and that ports very nicely to OBJ format for personal use with the free ModelConverterX utility.  It's the same that I used to feature here at C21VN before I got my hands on the fanmade SH3 model.  With regards to retail efforts there's an excellent one for its day with the old Jutland video game by Storm Eagle Studios (you can use NinjaRipper to get that one), and an even better one by Lesta Studios for World of Warships (good luck finding that one).  That's pretty much it on alternatives.  The Jutland Bayern might be in that big-ass archive of my old naval model releases that somebody else put together and is floating around out there, although I can't have anything to do with that for obvious reasons (ask around), so good luck hunting there too.
