Description

Ported to OBJ from the fan created model included with the Stargate Command mod pack for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  While I'm not making my port of this particular model available for public download, SketchUp artist Adam W. has a very similar low poly effort that you could download for free from his Google 3D Warehouse account the last time I checked.  You'll have to port it yourself if you need it in other 3D model formats (beware of flipped normals, common SketchUp porting issue).  Here's the link:

The X-302 was Stargate Command's second spacecraft developed based on reverse-engineered alien technology, but it was also the first built entirely on Earth.  The X-302 was a pure space fighter, based in part on reverse engineering studies conducted on two captured Goa'uld death gliders and with current human technology adapted to duplicate or replace their unique components as much as possible.  It was also going to be humanity's first hyperspace capable spacecraft; however; its experimental hyperspace generator failed initial testing and development work was abandoned at the time.  That said, and despite the subsequent loss of the X-302 prototype itself (per the series; go watch it), it was considered a resounding success in almost every other way.  More months of work went into the program to address problems found with the lost X-302 prototype, a working kludge was found to deal with the problems with the hyperspace generator (making it usable for short bursts only), and a modified version with many fixes finally entered SGC service some months later designated as the F-302.  It became became the standard SGC space fighter as soon as it entered service and still was by the time the SG-1 series came to its end.

An F-302 is somewhat larger than a Death Glider given the component adaptation issue, although it's considered just as capable in almost every way.  Another reason why the F-302 is larger is that it was designed from the beginning as a two-man craft, like the old Goa'uld Needle Threaders, whereas the stock Death Glider is strictly a single pilot craft.  With the X-302/F-302 the pilot sits in the front seat, while the back seat is normally used by an ordinance officer for handling onboard weaponry and thus leaving the pilot free to concentrate on flying.  Most of the ordinance officer's controls are duplicated at the pilot's position for one-man operations if necessary, and this happened more than a few times on the show -- especially whenever an X-302 was being used as a scout or recon craft (with an observer in the back seat) or as an armed personnel transport (with a single VIP passenger riding shotgun in the back).  Once SGC finished work on its own large spacecraft and they too entered service, then multiple F-302s were carried on board each of them as fighter support -- but said SGC large spacecraft are dealt with in their own separate entries here at Mandel's.

In addition to being hyperspace capable, the F-302 can operate at speeds up to Mach 6 in a planetary atmosphere.  On the show its maneuverability was deemed comparable to an F-22 Raptor while having "the ride of a Boeing 747 airliner" insofar as occupant comfort was concerned.  Their unique engines given them STOL capability, which means they can land and take off just about anywhere a normal civilian prop plane can use (!).  Primary armament is the same as the X-302 prototype; namely AIM-120A AMRAAM missiles -- although in theory other missile types could be carried too (but never are during the show).  Finally, and like the old F-4 Phantom II jet fighter, the X-302/F-302 was initially built as a missile-only craft.  This was due more to technology limitations at the time than anything else, but this issue was addressed and corrected as soon as was possible.
