Mother's little helper indeed! The cat is now out of the bag as to what's about to happen for our favorite starship captain insofar as you the audience and the crew of the Enterprise knows. Only Captain Kirk remains unaware of it. That's why they're called surprise birthday parties, of course. XD

This conversation does not appear in Ms. Nichols' original short story. I crafted it to cover for two paragraphs of informative narration whose pertinent data would have otherwise been lost in my web comic adaptation.

A little Trek TOS trivia here. I think this party would most likely be for Kirk's 37th birthday, given that this STNV episode takes place after the end of both TOS and TAS. Both of those together roughly correspond to the first four years of Kirk's first five year stint as captain of the Enterprise, if you go by the fannish one year per season general rule. His age was given as 34 in TOS "The Deadly Years" in the second season, and most fannish TOS stuff (such as STNV) is set during that "lost" fifth year of the original five year mission. There's a fair chance it could be for his 36th, during that fourth year and depending on close you want STNV to start after the end of TAS. That's all classic Trek fannish stuff, I know, and TOS fans can pick trivia nits on such topics as well as anyone with their own respective favorite franchises. I thought I'd share it with you anyway all the same. XD
