Description

Ported to OBJ from the wonderful low-poly creation by Atrahasis made for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games.  Based on the original design by Trek conceptional artist Rick Sternbach as originally created for and published in the old Star Trek Space Flight Chronology (STSFC) by Pocket Books back in 1979.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

This is one of those semi-canon pre-TOS starship classes from licensed Franchise media that has gathered quite the following over the years, and I can count myself as one of its original fans.  In the original STSFC Marshall was one of the main Earth-built starship classes of the Romulan War, and you can read all about what its creators came up with it in that work.  It was nicknamed the Hammerhead due to its appearance, it was a very rugged and robust design, well-armed and with excellent endurance, that not only helped to win the war but would go on to enjoy a very long post-war service life.  At least one example, Hannibal, was preserved as a museum ship and still existed in the TNG/DS9/VOY era timeframe as one of the last surviving examples of a Romulan War era starship.

It goes without saying that the Franchise has evolved a lot in the decades following the publication of the old STSFC, and thus Marshall's backstory has had to be adapted accordingly.  Whether or not it was a United Earth spacecraft (prefix UES) or an early Federation one (prefix USS) depends on when you date the founding of the Federation, for example, and it gets dated at different times in different threads of the Trek multiverse.  The folks at FASA also acknowledged Marshall in their own take on the Romulan War in their various gaming products back in the day, as have a number of us old classic Trek tech-heads in our own various writings and musings since (you can read mine in my old Federation Spaceflight Chronology or FSC, which is still available online).  Its popularity among Trek fans remains strong despite the Franchise having all but ignored it from the Enterprise series onward, but maybe someone there will see the light someday.  One can but hope.  In the meantime we fans have kept Marshall alive, and I suspect that it's going to be around for many years yet to come.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from a Franchise licensed publication (the old Star Trek Space Flight Chronology).

Live long and prosper.

ASIDE - One of the reasons I've always like the old Marshall is because of its looks.  It's so ugly it's beautiful.  It looks the part of the bruiser it was meant to be in its era, if you know what I'm saying.  It's wonderfully old, and I can still see this squaring off against its Romulan contemporaries back in the day.  *sigh*  XD
