Lawrence Welk (1903-1992) is best know as the father of champagne music (look it up), but he was also one of the last (possibly the last) of the classic big band leaders. Well do I remember watching The Lawrence Welk Show on television during its original broadcast run in my youth, and my own love for big band and so called "standards" music probably started with his show. His band's take on the classic instrumental standard "Calcutta," written by Heino Gaze, hit number one on the pop music charts in 1961 and was probably his band's biggest hit. Are we there yet? - A lot of us who have been or who are currently parents have had to put up with many variations on this particular little routine by our children on long road trips.
