Description
A custom mod by me of the game stock Victory ship model included with Silent Hunter 3 (SH3) by Ubisoft. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
Also known as the "County class" because every one of them was named for a county within one of the United States, the Haskell class attack transports (APA) of the United States Navy (USN) were based on the successful Victory ship design but specially modified during construction for their new role (MARCOM/MARAD designation VC2-S-AP5). Their purpose was to support amphibious assault operations, and they were capable of carrying up to 1500 soldiers along with all of their equipment and vehicles to a given landing zone and off-load them. 131 were originally ordered for the USN during World War II, but the last 14 were either cancelled or redesignated for completion as a different VC2 type due to the end of the war in 1945, resulting in a total of 117 in all. Most were mothballed immediately after the war, but a few were kept in service and continued to support USN operations during the Cold War. The oldest surviving Haskell in USN possession, USS Gage (APA-168), was sold for scrap in 2009 after efforts failed to preserve her as a museum ship. The last surviving Haskell in any form, USS Range Sentinel (ex-USS Sherburne, APA-205), which had been converted into a range tracking vessel for USN regular and ballistic missile testing, was decommissioned in 1997 and later scrapped in 2012. a very useful source if you're planning on repainting this
as a given class member in proper wartime camo
Most of you who are armchair naval buffs like me will immediately recognize this from the old Revell USS Montrose and USS Randall plastic model kits, first released in the late 1950s and which have been with us ever since (I think Atlantis has them now but don't quote me). Frankly I'm surprised no one's already done this mod for SH3, as it was fairly easy to do. I patterned it on those, as I had one handy, with almost everything I needed to turn the game stock Victory ship model into a fair approximation of Haskell coming from the game stock Glengyle class LSI(L) model. The only other parts that didn't come from that were the small AA gun platforms, which fan modder iambecomelife made for use with his many Merchant Fleet Mod (MFM) ship models and which I retextured for use this one.
This is not 100% accurate and even less so for individual class members, as there was a fair amount of variety in the way many of them were fitted per surviving photos and other media. All the same I hope it does a fairly good job of suggesting its subject, and perhaps the Silent Hunter fan modding community will take it from there and even put it into the game for me. You have my permission to do so. All I ask is that you give Ubisoft credit for the Victory ship base model and Glengyle class extra parts, me (Richard Mandel) for the Haskell class APA mod, and iambecomelife for his custom small AA gun platforms. Thank you.
