Description
I started doing these expression exercises using the 25 Essential Expressions worksheet found here: [link] But I found there were expressions I was missing and a few whose differences were subtle enough to be duplicates. So here's my version with eighteen expressions. Please feel free to use this worksheet on your own characters. I hope you find it useful.EDIT: You can find an incredibly useful tutorial on emotions and facial expressions here: [link]

Woo-hoo, thanks! Heh-heh, the Caz ones ought to be fun. I should do Chance, too, huh?

You should! Each character is a unique challenge. For example, with Ken, I have the constraints of the anime designs. With Caz, I have Mr. Dignity to consider.

Heh-heh, you do Caz, I'll do Caz (eventually) and we can meld the bunch! Can I raid the old manga for expressions? I did lots of variations on "annoyed" and "unhappy" in that. *snerk*

You did! And a couple of "irritated" and "shocked" expressions as well. Though I think there are a couple of happier ones in the manga.
Oh yeah: For this particular chart, I substituted "embarrassed" for "drunk" since I'm not sure Caz can get drunk anymore.

Agreed, I don't think Caz can get "drunk" in the classical sense. Maybe "intoxicated via Sunset" would do as a substitute... or "afterglow", that would work. And then I could do Chance being "embarrassed".

Hmm, an afterglow shot would kind of fit in under "happy." I'll cross out the "drunk" description and write "embarrassed" over it. Or I can send you an edited file.

Save the "drunk" one -- there may be a spell or something that has a similar effect. Or maybe the Satyxis' capability to Beguile a male would fit there.

Hmm... well, Peebo's got him aboard a ship full of Satyxis right now. Wonder if anything'll happen there. It would be interesting if he came across a spell or something that got him the equivalent of drunk. Wonder if he's the giggly type, the loud type or the emotional type (look out)?

Oh dear, I hadn't considered too deeply about what type of drunk he'd be. Caz might be more of the happy drunk than the loud -- somehow I see him getting quieter, not louder.
Yeap, I'm wondering if we'll see what happens with the Satxyi and Caz. And Sunset.

Well, in the latest installment he has been pleasantly subdued, but the "bunk bouncing" has not yet commenced. I have the sketches blocked out and may redo one or two. It's been a fun exercise.

"Bunk bouncing" gives me such a wonderful mental image. Especially if there are more than two people in the bunk!

I can see people flying out of the bunk in various silly poses. Hee hee!

Combine that with the ship's pitching on a brisk sea and the logistics start getting scary. Rock n'roll, everyone!

Yea, verily. Especially since one of the party has pointy objects stuck to her head.
They don't call it "the bounding main" for nothing! Hee!

Ahaha! That thought had occurred to me... Although "Nineteen Essential Expressions" doesn't alliterate well.
Though it also occurs to me that even when alone, sharp horns + bedtime + rough seas could result in shredded bedding and the possibility of getting stuck in the headboard or cabin wall....

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-12 11:25:19 +0000 UTC]
Roger that on the sharp horns and bedtime hazards. Of course, if the seas are high enough, all hands would be on deck keeping the ship afloat and not in their bunks, so maybe ripped bedding is less of a problem? But absent a gale, a good rolling sea would make for interesting nights. Maybe they put padded covers on the horns to lessen the chance of damage? Heh-heh, like the curlers of yesteryear! And Toruk forbid any outsiders see you with them on.

With little corks on the tips of the horns.
And another cartoon explaining why satin sheets aboard a ship are a bad idea.

Oh dear, I hadn't thought of the sheets -- satin sheets means you'd never stay in/on your bunk!

Neat! Which ones?
I'm doing a sheet for Sunset, and the roughs are down. Plus I did an exercise and half of the "Journey" inks. This is what comes from falling asleep early and waking up in the wee hours. I blame the construction project yesterday. Here's hoping that the humongous pile of dirt left in what remains of the driveway gets smoothed down and bricked in before the month is up.

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-05-14 04:15:10 +0000 UTC]
Let's see, I did "sarcastic" and "laughing" and "irritated". I need to get out the light box and draw them fresh since I can't keep Spirit's head in the boxes.
Ooo, you're doing Sunset! Wanna see!
Oh, man, you're doing the contractor and construction-thing too!! Let's keep telling each other to "hang in there!"
My pantry is done -- Goodwill comes tomorrow to take away piles o'stuff. It's amazing. Next, the shed, and not much in there is going to be salvaged, the demo crew can just haul most of it away. Yow!

Sounds like you've got most of your preparation done. Meanwhile, I'm looking at piles of sand and bricks and no work crew other than a surly manager who dropped off more cement and wanted his check. This is the part of construction I dread: the limbo period when the crew disappears.
When I did the expressions, I just drew 'em freehand on a large sheet and then used Photoshop to crop and paste them into the worksheet. It works out well, especially if I have to redo any.
Sunset will be next up, soon as I sent you the Journey inks.

Got Spirit's expression sheet posted! Finally.
Next time I'm using your technique to do the expressions - working in the little boxes over 2 weeks made for a lot of variability in line tone.

I saw! I like those! Is Ch'laen next?
Working outside the boxes means you have more control over size and detail as well.
Sunset's sheet is about 75% done, so I hope to post that tomorrow.

Mouthwash really helps with the breath issue.
So far I have 9 sketches each for two candidates: Ken and Caz. They make for good, quick doodles. It's compiling everything onto the chart that takes so much time.
