Very nice and clean! Just the thing for the old zine production process we once used. I love Joe's expression, too.

This was one of the old pieces I was especially happy with because the hatching turned out right. It's tempting me to try that technique out again or see what a couple look like colored.

Color over that would look neat. And reading Tezuka's manga makes me aware of how many effects we can get with crosshatching. I'm tempted to try and make some brushes with special crosshatching to extend the palette.

I have one more that would look interesting colored (it's an ocean at night scene). I'd like to see what you do with the brushes. Are these to be backgrounds in Manga Studio?

Murasaki99 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-19 06:34:35 +0000 UTC]

I think I could import some stuff as "ziptone" into Manga Studio, but brushes would just be Paint Shop Pro brushes. I'll have to mess around with it when I get a spare moment.

Diinzumo In reply to lunaticvee27 [2008-11-18 04:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The style originated back in the days of really crummy copiers. I needed something that would reproduce clearly, and I hadn't gotten the hang of Zipatone. You had to be careful with all the hatchingβ€”a little goes a long way.

lunaticvee27 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-18 05:05:34 +0000 UTC]

Amen! I still don't have a good handle on it yet.

People laud Ziptones, but I can't help but adore hatching and crosshatching. It produces a darker, but overall more stark, vibrant piece, as evidenced in this one. ^^

Diinzumo In reply to lunaticvee27 [2008-11-18 06:35:06 +0000 UTC]

People laud zip, but it requires accuracy with a very sharp blade and a lot of patience. The old American zipatone also stuck fast once it was placed. The Japanese screen tones were much more forgiving, but I kept going back to hatching.

Do you have a piece where you tried this technique? I'm gonna have to try this old technique on a new piece and see if I still have the knack.

lunaticvee27 In reply to Diinzumo [2008-11-18 23:49:26 +0000 UTC]

I don't anymore, sadly. It's been manys the year since I've tried to seriously hatch on a real piece (as opposed to half-assed notebook scribbles). Of course now that you say that, I think I might have to try my hand and see how rusty it is. ^^
