They do have very distinctive eyes. That's why I like the art style so much.

I've seen far too many humongous moe moe eyes everywhere that Joe's eyes are a sight for sore eyes.

Excellent information, Wendy! I know I am guilty of target eyes! LOL
Do they teach these types of things in art school? I really wish I had gone...

Nope, they didn't teach me this in art school. To be honest with you, art school for me was a lot more harmful than helpful (I majored in it, then quit drawing for the next couple of decades). Find a community group who does life drawing sessions with a model, borrow the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and save yourself tuition and heartache.

Yes, yes!! *Bows to the Tatsunoko masters*
I love your succinct explanation, it is excellent and sums up exactly what we need to know. Perfect!

I remember when these things dawned on me in the early years. The shading the tops of the irises was this huge breakthrough for me. I've seen some of the newer artists drawing "target" eyes, so I thought I'd mention it.

I think it was one of the old shoujo manga - Rose of Versailles - that made me realize a lot could be done with the eyes. Even Matsumoto did cool stuff with eyes and their shading to bring out emotions. Heh, I won't be putting stars in their eyes, though. (Unless I wanna be silly, that is.)

I remember focusing on the expressiveness of the eyes more than anything else. Such a dramatic difference from your typical seventies American comics, where the eyes were just dots in the face. Add to that I was living in Japan when I was a kid, and the anime/manga style at the time involved HUMONGOUS eyes with a constellation of stars. I was never tempted to draw that way, but the Tatsunoko style managed to appeal in just the right ways.
No more than two little lights in the eyes. That's my rule unless I'm being sarcastic.

Heh-heh, we should try Caz n'Sunset in that shoujo style... I could 'em in Retrol "Rose" style!

Even scarier: I scribbled it on a bit of scrap paper this afternoon... Poor, poor Caz.

Well, I kinda tossed that one in horror. I have references for another one, though.

Thanks! There is a scene during the "Destruction of Crescent Base" episode where Joe's eyes look like that. He's trying to rescue Jinpei underwater, and he's drowning. It's a really intense scene.

I also think of when he learned about the brain damage and that he's got maybe a week to go, though I still don't think the irises are as small as the drowning scene.
These are so great. I love Joe's eyes up in the corner, too.
And look at what Ebony just did with what she's learning!

I think another Joe scene with a really intense expression is in the "death god buffalo" episode where the team gets run off the road and a cliff in a station wagon. Again, Joe's irises weren't as small as in the drowning scene. That was unique.
As for Ebony's stuff... da—aamn! Talk about dramatic!
