Actually, successful mercs generally have better gear, as they don't have to use standard military equipment, they can buy their own gear, and they only need to outfit themselves and not an army. So they can afford to splurge on the best equipment money can buy.

I'd say that's actually a fairly light kit she's got.
Though the pads are prolly excessive. Had originally based it on SWAT gear because the starting idea was different.

The idea of Ponyville being the life that Fluttershy started to get away from being a merc is awesome, and would instantly be my headcanon except for one detail:

I've actually given it a bit of thought, but haven't really come up with anything solid:
Perhaps it just became a childhood fascination, eventually shrouded and rendered dormant by real-world responsibilities. Its return, and her introversion may be a coping mechanism of sorts.
So something along the lines of PTSD Flutters.
Alternatively or additionally, she could've been involved with peacekeeping operations as an extension of the discovery she made back then.
In the alternate she might have still been aware of her connection to nature, and opted for the contractor pay grade to accelerate her retirement.

That was actually a title I was planning to use when I started this, but the context changed drastically.
It was going to be her in her boarded up cottage, with shafts of light shining through the cracks to illuminate her house chock full of guns, money, and coke. There was going to be DEA/ATF swarming the place as well, but it didn't really play out; so it became this.
