The forward assault by the humans on Equestria's front artillery battery was increasing in danger by the minute. Human bombers flew in V formations above in the night sky as Equestrian anti air guns fired nonstop from the ground. The humans had intensified their assault now attacking the battery with armored units. As explosions and shrapnel flew around them two soldiers stood in the front trenches shooting as best they could through the smoke and ash. Their orders were to hold the artillery battery as long as they could against the humans. As one of the soldiers observed the battlefield a human sniper shot echoed across the battle. The gunner looked to his left and saw with a horrified look on his face his partner had taken a bullet to the head. Before he could do anything else the roar of a human bomber cut across the noise above all else. As he looked above into the inky black sky he saw a flaming human bomber falling toward the trenches. He covered his head with his arms and fell flat ontoΒ  the muddy blood stained ground of the trench as the bomber smashed into the trenches. The last thing he saw as he rolled ontoΒ his back... was his partner floating out of the clouds with his hoof extended towards him... He wore a calm comforting smile. As he reached up and grabbed his partners hoof his world faded to darkness.

The bullet that made a hole thatΒ large wouldn't be that clean.
It would have most likely taken at least half of his head off and splattered grey and white matter all over the guy beside him.
Who would have then been too much of a heightened state to react besides acknowledging the fact his buddy got waxed.
After the firefight dies down, reality will return enough for him to properly process what happened. Upon noticing the brain matter still clinging to his uniform he would get sick all over himself further adding to the filth

War really isn't very pretty.

DimFann In reply to JOLT-the-dragon [2015-09-20 10:09:23 +0000 UTC]

It'd really depend on what they're firing, how it hit, and what it did afterwards; though, the helmet is still there so you can imagine any sort of bloody mess that'd you'd like on the right side of his head.
Also, nobody seems to have picked up on the fact that he's been hit twice. The exit of the first being the dark area in the center of the back, which didn't kill him immediately, allowing for enough time for him to get the attention of the gunner (hence the outstretched leg/arm/limb).Β
Originally there was muuuuch more stuff flying around, as this is was intended to be the instant after the moment he'd been hit the second time, but I chose to leave it out because it was shaping up to be too much gore-wise (the spots on the gunner's face/helmet/etc are what I decided to leave in out of it all).

JOLT-the-dragon In reply to DimFann [2015-09-21 18:58:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I noticed the dark spot on his back, but what stuck out was ultra-clean head wound from a bullet (assuming thier head to be at approx. 3 feet) of what seems to be .50 calibur or higher.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DimFann In reply to JOLT-the-dragon [2015-09-23 07:34:51 +0000 UTC]

The exit wound isn't actually shown here though. The hole pictured is a hole in the helmet. I've explained in a post below that their helmets are similar in spec to WW2 steel helmets, which weren't bulletproof by any means. The projectiles they would be using are more akin to ~mid-late 1800s rifle rounds, large, irregular, slower, and far from having perfected ballistics (compared to a modern .50 BMG). There would definitely still be a fair amount of penetration, but not necessarily the utter destruction you would see with high velocity/expanding ammunition.

ColonelBSacquet In reply to DimFann [2016-06-14 14:08:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmm ... their weapons don't look like they'd use some mid/late 1800's rounds.

Besides, late 1800's include 1891 to 1898 bullets, which were still used well after WW2.
Right?

I even read that the bullet for the Mosin-Nagant is still in use nowadays, in the Russian armed forces.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

JOLT-the-dragon In reply to DimFann [2015-10-31 23:46:47 +0000 UTC]

There would be utter distruction. The pressure wave caused by the energy being transfered into the skull and brain matter would cause the head to explode (judging on the size of the hole in the helmet, and that you say its 1800ish rifle rounds that have lower velocity than modern ballistics that would in turn dump even more energy into the head.) when it comes into contact with any tissue that gets in its way.

Gooders008 In reply to Kabutomania [2015-07-22 16:29:40 +0000 UTC]

The helmets there wearing look like a cross between a U.S M1 helmet and a M42 Stahlhelm, however the helmets seen in the other war universe pictures look like modified M1's to support the protection of the ponies ears, so I take it these helmets worn by the gunners are only worn by them to signify there a gunner or something or am I wrong?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DimFann In reply to Gooders008 [2015-07-22 18:41:05 +0000 UTC]

The differences are generally due to laziness, the helmet they'd all have it I was being consistent across the board would look something like:
Β
Β
The shape is a hybrid of the M1 and modern kevlar helmets (which resemble the M42). They're simple steel however.
Standard issue for all ground forces. Unicorns have a fitted hole or vertical slot for their horn.

The original designs lend themselves well to creating cute scenarios. I imagine that it's pretty challenging to remove the cute from g4 based ponies.
