Description
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio maxSo i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
I made a JPEG tutorial because:
1) I'ts annoying when you have to change from photoshop to your browser, and vice-versa. With Jpegs you have everything neat in photoshop
2) I didnt feel like writing HTML
If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line.
In addition, here's a tutorial on making rings. I see many rings and tutorials produced with the spiral tool and that's just terrible! Thanks for the effort... but that's just wrong.

I must admit, this is one of the best tutorials I've seen, but right at the Gaussian blur part, I keep getting this annoying effect where the blurred edge is brown. Feedback?

Hey (: I gotta give it to you, very nice tutorial. But right after the part where i need to CTRL+T the shadow layer and drag it outwards, i can't get the halo around the planet to work. You say i need to make the light come out of the upper left and by doing that, to drag the the shadow layer a bit to the bottom right, that's where i get stuck, it would be great if you could help me with that part (: Please Respond Thanks in advance!!

Great tutorial! Β
But I have that problem too.. Β Β People keep saying they on other posts that they fix it themselves, but don't tell how and I'm stuck!
The problem is when I pull the shadow layer down and size it, then use (shadow being "active") + CTRL + "base" - then COPY (CRTL +C) and PASTE (CTRL+V), it doesn't let me copy the shadow layer! Β It ends up pasting the last image that I copied, (the texture) not the shadow layer. Β Maybe this is a problem because I'm using PS CS3 on PC, but it doesn't let me copy the shadow layer and paste in onto the base.

To get rid of the excess shadow, I selected the "base" layer pixels (Right click on icon), then inverted the selection and erased the shadow with a mighty big eraser brush. Β Then I merged the layers. Β HA! Β My own fix. Β Thank you Thank You! Β Β
So I guess if you're using CS3 or lower - you can't copy and paste the layers into each other. Β The problem with antiquated programs I guess. Β
I'm continuing on! Β

Hi, thanks for the tut, it looks great. However, when I try to do the clone step (the second step) it tells me I need to define and area by alt clicking? If I do that it only clones part of the image so it makes it look like the identical image except every time it gets smaller. Any help would be appreciated. (I'm using CS5 BTW)

[link] I couldn't wait and decided to fool around a bit before work(I rushed that texture), but it was good fun. I would have tried to hand paint it otherwise, I am stubborn.

This ridiculously simplifies things. I always wondered how all those lovely, seemingly-tedious planets were being shaded and textured so realistically. This is a really flexible method that allows you to maintain intricate texture without the hand cramps. Thanks for sharing.

hey man, great tut! but i'm stuck in the part where I increase the shadow size after applying the gaussian blur, the shadow does not appear soft at all, it is completely hard in the border, don't know what am I doing wrong?

Hey, I'm working through the tutorial (great BTW) and I'm stuck on:
"with the shadow layer active (not selected, but active)" -to remove a portion of the shadow from the background
which layer is selected (highlighted) at this point? and if I'm on Mac am I "Command + selecting base layer" and then copy & paste.
Thanks
π: 0 β©: 2
dinyctis In reply to gfaerch [2012-09-20 02:17:36 +0000 UTC]
You must have the shadow layer active (the one on which you're working).
That's the step where you erase the extra part of the shadow that extends outside the planet shape. Let me know if that works

I've been travelling through some space tutorials and yours is the best I've found.
Great music information, simplfied techniques and of course the humour factor. I've not only learnt but enjoyed myself whilst doing it. I'll be recomending you. =^_^=
