Description I wrote this a while back and completely forgot about it. This is a tutorial of how to create simple planets. For more advacned and detailed techniques visit Alyn's Advacned Planet Tut . This is designed to give new space artists an idea of how to develop their skills and for making less detailed background planets. There are probably loads of errors, so please tell me if you find a problem.

The atmosphere technique was originally covered by +dinyctis so credits to him there. For more details on cloud brushing see UCD's Land Planet Tutorial . Thanks to all the inspirational artists out there who got me into space art and especailly r4z0r for being an awesome community.

Enjoy!

When you click the download button it says it doesn't exist and the advanced planet tutorial is also down.

Awesome tutorial
Used this as a reference for my first portfolio assignment in my Advanced Photoshop Class. Had to create all my own textures (rules to remain with only native Photoshop items, no external content), and even my basic texture turned out decent

Once I'm finished my complete composition, I'll share a link

I tried your tut on school and found You can make a large circle easier if you just use a large round brush. ^^ No need to use the oval selection tool.

It's a great tut tough, thanks. I'm adding it to favs.

I think it's a very good tut. Sometimes you don't need the most complicated thing in the world to finish off your peace sometimes just a simple planet in the background will fill itout perfect. In that respect this is a perfect tutorial that will allow you to fill in that request.

awesome, i'm following this to make my first planet as part of another image. its perfectly easy to follow and helps tonnes. you'd never imagine where i got the textures from or that thats actually what i used to make my planet. I'd say yours looks a little better but for a first try ...bah well.

excellent tutorial, thank you very much

I tried it, I got most of it right, but the instructions on what layers do what and where you need to impliment effects becomes a bit lost.

Is the Spherize suppose to almost double the radius of the ball?

zyclone In reply to Bushido-Boy [2004-12-31 16:50:21 +0000 UTC]

no it's not... AH!!!! got it. i must've missed this out in writin. before spherizing, select the layer, as in ctrl click it on the layers tab to select all pixels, then when spherized it retains it's shape. sorry! thansk for letting me know i'll change that soon.

Ahh ok Cool. I tried it again, but my comp went nuts, the next 2 hrs were spent on getting rid of spyware,malware..lol.

ok, hope it works for you

Bushido-Boy [2004-12-31 12:12:39 +0000 UTC]

Step 5 screws up. It skews the left side of the planet and comes out like one-side is a football. Are we suppose to merge the layers before? Highlight one? What?

zyclone In reply to Bushido-Boy [2004-12-31 12:25:55 +0000 UTC]

select the texture layer then go filter> distort>spherize. this filter makes thigns round basically. set 100%, then do it again at around 50% normally works for me. it might look a bit funny, but it turns out looking great
