The size a rather large...

Most of the credit for this has to go to Greg Martin [link] for the techniques for highlights/shadows and atmosphere.
Also a big thank you to every other space artist I have asked questions of, for everyone that commented on my work to help me improve, and to the people who suggested I make this.

This tutorial assusmes some basic photoshop and space art experience. If you get stuck or have any questions about any step I'm always happy to reply to any notes I get.

I don't get the whole texture thing. Is it textures you add with other images or textures in the brush?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Doc-Shadow In reply to Sikura-Leaves [2007-07-12 17:17:51 +0000 UTC]

I use texture brushes for my planets.

Thanks for the question!

To be honest, I have no idea what you are talking about when talking about the whole section of linking layers, merging, and erasing atmosphere.

This tutorial would be easier to understand if it had more of a detailed explanation. Specifics are always great for a tutorial, and you don't always give specifics in this tutorial. I know it's not easy doing this, as you have so little space, but if you have to, submit several deviations for one tutorial. That's what I do.

I can definitely say this is not newby friendly. You have to understand the low-details in this tutorial, inorder to go on.

Doc-Shadow In reply to Kelpalots [2007-01-23 00:59:55 +0000 UTC]

I actually said directly in the description that the tutorial assumes basic Photoshop knowledge and preferably a little experience with space art. So I the "light on details" feel to this is for that reason.

Kelpalots In reply to Doc-Shadow [2007-01-23 01:10:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes. It actually clicked after reading another tutorial. Merged linked did catch me, but I thought, "Wait a minute, just merge the linked layers, duh! It's that simple, don't confuse yourself with whats said!"

Measure basic Photoshop knowledge.

And yeah, I read your comments, however, I must of not seen or paid attention to "perferably a little experience with space art". Sorry for not noticing that part.

How do you link the two layers together? I don't understand what you mean.

No offense, but you should really get a new texture.. Greg martin's is so whored

Doc-Shadow In reply to enjoi-gfx [2005-07-05 20:43:28 +0000 UTC]

I still use several textures on every planet, so it's never really bothered me that I also use Greg Martins in combination with others.

Not too different from other planet tutorials I've seen...

Doc-Shadow In reply to xX-the-Stranger-Xx [2005-03-06 15:25:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeha it's not extremely different, but people were asking about how I get some of the looks I get so Ithink it at least gives people a few more options and understanding about using more layers.

I've been looking for some good tutorials on planets, I've found some, but I can only make limited textures with them, this one gives me a much bigger variety and the end result looks alot better, I havent tried it yet, I'll have a go at your tutorial very soon though, Thanks.

Hey, How do I set things as brush textures apart from the default ones? thats wat im having trouble with at the moment >.<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Doc-Shadow In reply to raolain [2005-03-09 01:19:44 +0000 UTC]

Ok, to make new textures you first need to open the image you want to use as a texture in photoshop. Then click on the "Edit" menu, and toward the bottom there will be an option to "Define Pattern"

It will popup a little screen so you can name it if you wat to, then after that it will appear under the texture option in the brushes tab
