Description
UPDATESince dA ate the zip file a while back and I don't have the files for the HTML version anymore, this deviation will simply let you download the JPG version. Yes, it's a bit redundant, but let's just think of it as a redirection. Here is the description from the old tutorial:
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max
So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
Enjoy, make the most of it, and dont hesitate to drop me a line if you have any questions.

It looks like you applied the blur effect to the shadow layer while you still had it selected (animated dotted line going around it). Deselect it (ctrl+d on a pc and command+d on a mac) and apply the effect then.

Hello, I'm sorry but I have a problem with your tuts. After the step called " This is what it should look like after gaussian blur is applied to the shadow layer ", the external glow of your planet change and is bigger in the picture of the next step. How ?
Second : When I try to erase parts of the atmosphere layer, the external glow move and come into the planet, so it' s visible throught the shadow layer and ugly :/. How can I resolve the problem ?
Thx a lot, Ishiru

dinyctis In reply to Ishiru-san [2011-08-12 14:39:22 +0000 UTC]
Hi Ishiru,
The external glow looks bigger in the next step because the next step tells you to transform the layer by moving it and/or making it smaller, so you expose more of the atmosphere layer.
The second part tells me that you didn't flatten the layer and that you're erasing the layer while the effeccts are still being applied to it. Make a new empty layer on top of it and then merge the atmosphere with it. That should do it!
Let me know if you have any more questions

I'm a little new to photoshop. Can someone explain in a little bit more detail the "active but not selected" layers? I know I'm doing it wrong because when I CTRL+Click the "Base" layer, I don't even get the option to copy. Any help?

dinyctis In reply to Shangazo [2010-11-28 18:52:43 +0000 UTC]
Active but not selected means that it's the layer in which you're currently working. "Selected" means with the dotted lines around the shape of the layer in the canvas.

I'm kind of new to Photoshop and I've got most of this tutorial figured out. But can someone explain to me the whole "active, but not selected" part where he gets rid of the excess shadow? I know I'm doing it wrong, because when I CTRL+Click "Base" layer, I don't even have the option to Copy. Any help?

I have edited the deviation now. dA ate the Zip file a long time ago and I don't have the HTML files anymore, so now this one just links to the JPG version, which is the same as the original.
