Description
UPDATESince dA ate the zip file a while back and I don't have the files for the HTML version anymore, this deviation will simply let you download the JPG version. Yes, it's a bit redundant, but let's just think of it as a redirection. Here is the description from the old tutorial:
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max
So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
Enjoy, make the most of it, and dont hesitate to drop me a line if you have any questions.

Hmm, a good tutorial.
Very little room to get varied results (Which can be somewhat annoying to a novice).. and the outcome is simply brilliant.

dinyctis In reply to Ofijo [2004-04-09 13:43:08 +0000 UTC]
actually, there is a lot of room for varied results. All one has to do is use different and more textures, changing their blending modes here and there.

hmm.. i saw this coming, just a moment after i posted this message - i think you took what I meant the wrong way.. I meant as in the tutorials where it's not very systematic and uhh.. 'settable'.. where you're required to do alot of painting and colourchoosing.. and alot of involuntary change of result..
but uh, yes, i knew, and know what you mean.

having a problem, cant figuere it out.
when i get to messing with the atmosphere layer, it applies the layer style settings to the entire layer, not just the planet (elleptical selection)
what do i do? teh 'planet' uis selected with the marquee tool, but it sitll applies to the whole layer instead of JUST inside marquee, what am I doing wrong? *cry*

dinyctis In reply to Noobai [2004-01-03 17:59:24 +0000 UTC]
hmmm maybe your atmosphere layer doesnt have the shape of the planet and is just covering the whole screen?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Noobai In reply to dinyctis [2004-01-03 18:57:43 +0000 UTC]
hmm? It is an exact copy of the base layer. How can I make it ahve the shape of just the planet? Should the backgroudns be transparent?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
dinyctis In reply to Noobai [2004-01-03 19:05:34 +0000 UTC]
if its an exact copy then its fine......thats weird though.......are you applying the layer changes to the atmosphere layer or to the planet layer? that might be confusing
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Noobai In reply to dinyctis [2004-01-03 19:21:23 +0000 UTC]
nah, i figuered it out, the reason was that i made an exact copy of the planet AND a background, not just the planet on a trasnparent layer. got it figuered out now. beautiful tutorial, thanks a ton!
