Description
UPDATESince dA ate the zip file a while back and I don't have the files for the HTML version anymore, this deviation will simply let you download the JPG version. Yes, it's a bit redundant, but let's just think of it as a redirection. Here is the description from the old tutorial:
Ok, so over the ages, i noticed that if there is one thing that space artists (especially newcomers) struggle with, then it has to be planet textures. Lots of them just cant get their planets to look good, cant find good textures, or simply dont have 3d studio max
So i decided to throw everyone a bone, and i made a tutorial on how to make a somewhat realistic-looking planet using only photoshop. Be adviced that you need to have some basic photoshop knowledge to follow this, and if not, i suggest you spend 50 dollars on the adobe photoshop book, or read the help files that photoshop came with)
Enjoy, make the most of it, and dont hesitate to drop me a line if you have any questions.

This method doesnt really require brushes, but there's no doubt that you can incorporate your techniques to make very nice textures

Yea, the HTML version always has issues. I'll try to get it sorted out soon.
Meanwhile, check out the flat version: [link]

man, I gotta thank U for teahing us how to make a planet... but this tutorial has a lot of problems... but at the end I figured them out... some days passed and I remembered this tutorial and I thought, "wanna see his work", and then saw ur first tutorial that has EVERY step that one has to follow and I was "Β·$Β·$&/&/(), but the truth is that I really apreciate this...and ur work is amazing... I have 2 attempts in my page... the firts one sucks at all, but the second one I think is not bad, but need some comments of the master (you, but dont get ur ego to the clouds ok?) and I want u to see how ur students do the job. please comment it and tell me what cain I do to make it better, and I wantes to make galaxies... but as u will see they suck too... [link] the light also sucks, and the stars... they look lke crap jajaja

That's a nice comment, thank you!
I'd like to know what you mean by "problems," though. I wrote this tutorial before I took a technical writing class and most people were able to follow it pretty well, so I'd like to know where you think the problems lie.
I was thinking of making a galaxy tutorial, but I realized that a time-lapse video might be a much better alternative, since I dont think there are exact steps you gotta take like with a planet. With a planet, you have different things such as atmosphere, land, textures, shadow, and thats it. With a galaxy....well, it's a much more abstract thing in the visual sense and I can't break it down in sections in the same way I can break down a planet.
Your problem with stars is that they dont have depth and are too bright. Some bright clusters here and there are fine, but they shouldnt really take focus away from the scene. Try practicing lots and lots until you have a very nice starfield, then use that as the base for all your works. That's what I do. Of course, I change it up a bit with every work (work on clusters, color change, tone, brightness, etc).
It's all practice, really, and lots of experimenting. Keep trying new things until you find a direction you like. Some tutorials can help, but some can point you in the wrong direction (like those tutorials that use the swirl filter to make planet rings).

This is great. I'm actually looking to get into doing this type of stuff (it's pretty cool looking and you never know when it could come in handy) and this is the best texture maker I've seen here. Thanks for offering this.
