Description
This started as a commission from my cousin, who happens to play the violin. He had the idea of a violin with a heart and wanted me to make an illustration of it so he could put it on a shirt for personal use. The problem was that I couldn't draw a stick figure even if my life depended on it. I suggested a photo-manipulation instead. He agreed, and there never was a shirt. At the time of making this I had bought and was listening to King Diamond's The Puppet Master, which tells the story of a puppeteer who makes his puppets out of real people, the process being a rather brutal and gory one. I believe that, in a way, that influenced this image a lot.
My cousin provided a lot of violin pictures and I selected this one. The heart was from a public domain medical archive that I'm afraid is no longer online. Textures may be from here, devart, so if you see anything that looks familiar, let me know so I can give proper credit to its stock-makers.

This is moderately disturbing, but I love it. It reminds me so much of what my mentor told me about emotion through my performances..."You want to gauge their hearts out with a rusty spoon. Shooting them would be too kind..." We have some good times. *snerk* But really, this is a really unique concept... well done! And the detail is...ah! Amazing.

De hecho, toco el piano (y la bateria, pero esa es otra historia). El violin me gusta por su sonido y su forma, aunque no lo he tratado formalmente.

Hello. I read your poem and I enjoyed it. I loved the choice of words and the imagery it conjures. Great stuff.
As for the preview thing; sure, use it away. In some way, I think, it fits.
Cheers.

I can't believe it... this is just perfect! The violin is the most noble instrument.. the instrument of love, pain and pure art.

Hmm. . . I've always admired the clean lines and curves of a violin? Not so much noticable here. . .
I can't be biased though, it is innovative.

Just so you know, I printed this and it now resides in my viola case for everyone to see at rehearsals. Just a small example of what should be done to violins every day.
That was a joke, violins are all right by me. But if I could be serious for just a moment... VIOLA POWER. Great picture. I'm just being goofy becaue I have absolutely no words to express how amazing and powerful this is. Bravo.

I saw this piece when it was featured and didn't do anything about it because I was too affected by it. My parents are violinists, I myself am a pianist, and we all deeply know what it means to put your heart into your music and instrument. This piece haunted me enough to come back and fav it. Excellent, excellent work.
(sorry if this posts more than once. the browser is messing up on me)

Oh wow! As a violin lover and player myself...I adore it. You've given it life! It's not merely a tool, but a thing with an anthropormorphic persona. ...I love it. I love you for doing it. The fact that it has a heart and it's peirced and...yeah, I'll shutup now.

"It is said that musicians put their heart into their music" That says it all. It's definately not the most spectacular thing in the world. i'd say that it is more of a conceptual piece.

disintegration In reply to smashingpumpkins86 [2005-07-12 04:03:29 +0000 UTC]
I don't think it's either an spectacular thing or a conceptual piece. It's just a heart attached to a violin... there's no rocket science or a long-ass explanation for it. Although I'm having fun reading some of the most "conceptual" interpretations people have been giving in their comments.

You should title it "play your heart Out" or soemthing cliche like that! My DD got a bunch of comments that spoke of dentistry. It had nothing to do with dentists.....

i'll keep this short...well fist wow...and congrats on the DD...but one thing that i deffiantly belive is that every insterment is unique, and each insterment has a heart and a soul...and in a way it becomes an extentsion of the musician...and as a musican my self...i find that you expressed it verywell...and i like the disstressing that you did on the volin its self, tones are good...and everything fits seamlessly.

This is a great piece. I play the violin myself, and I think this really illustrates how the violin can captivate your heart, never to let go. Forever demanding you cross your own limits, forever asking that you will perfect yourself.

So, is there any particular reason why you think the image is very 'Erik'? Or it's just an ad-hoc compliment from a Gaston Leroux fan?
