Description
This is another thing that aggravates me. I live in Japan, and the Majority of young western people who visit or move here are here because they like anime. It gives western people a bad name. There is SOOOO much that makes Japan better. The sense of community, the culture, the language, the architecture, the food, the economy, the lifestyle, etc. It really sells Japan short by liking it because your favorite Anime takes place there >.> That's a horrible reason.
For those of you who TRULY want to move to Japan, I recommend this: Visit there for about 1 month. And no where nice, some outskirt city and commute places. Why? Because Japan is NOTHING like Western Culture and is an Acquired taste for some. Also, when you visit places like Kyoto and Tokyo for a short time, you get the sense of Awe and place Japan on a pedestal.
All I can say is:
Try it, before you buy it.
Don't Sell Japan short of what it is.

While I do like anime, I sometimes think about going to Japan not because of it, I actually want to know about it's culture and other stuff that defines Japan as a Country.

A lot of Japanese have moved to America because of Hollywood..You have too much hate going on, look for the joys in life and let others enjoy their lives as well.
I am Japanese and this doesn't bother me at all, I'm fine with people doing what they want. And no, not all of us in Japan hate 'westeners' or their reasons for coming to Japan, only the elitist pricks do.
Try being Japanese and living in New Zealand, now thats a whoooooole different culture! All I knew about New Zealand was their beautiful landscapes and lots of cute looking sheep. The Kiwis were not angry at me for that and I studied there for a long time. Because of my stay there I learned more about their culture and it improved my English a lot.
People that move to Japan can learn the culture while in Japan, even if their reason initially is for anime.

Interesting stamp. When I was little I was really into anime, but now that I'm older it really doesn't catch my interest much anymore. I will say anime did give me an interest in Japan at first, but then I started researching the country, it's culture, language more and more on my own and I really enjoy it. Anime now has really nothing to do anymore with my interest in the country. lol.

I love Anime but it wasn't the reason why I love Japan. It started by Video Games when I found out Japanese Pokemon Diamond (That was like on December 2006 back then and Pokemon Diamond wasn't release on America yet). Then Anime was the second , then Food, then the language, then the culture. I keep hearing that people who love Japan because of Anime saying that Japan is like heaven which it annoys me. Also, I even hate it when they use the word like "Kawaii" and "Desu" which it worries me both because I don't want anyone to think of me like that which you're right what you said "It gives western people a bad name." Japan isn't a perfect country and other countries as well. I know this stamp is old but I would like to hear from you.

Agreed, I have a few friends who are like that, the only reason why they would wanna visit Japan just because they can watch tons of anime and it's really irratating. It does set a bad examples of those of us Westerners who are truely interested in Japan for it's culture, language, the scenery, lifestlye, and ect.
Sure anime is nice (like the stuff myself) but using it as your only interest in Japan is indeed degrading to that country and very wrong.
I would want to go there for the many splendid sights, the interesting culture, an ok yes the wonderful cuisine there (yes I'm a piggy, but I'm a glutton for sushi and curry). I wonder if that makes me as bad as those anime fanatics?

Every country has a dark part of their history. ESPECIALLY the United States. What you'll hear of their history is no different than you'd hear of the English history the American colonists came from and even the last 200+ years of the US as an established country. I assure you, history is full of people and people suck.

Anime was what got me to research Japanese culture. I mean, bloodwise I am not Asian in the slightest, but I've been taking Tae Kwon Do since I was 3 (so about 12 years of training), which really taught me discipline which I know is important in Asian cultures. Yes, South Korea and Japan are two different cultures so I understand that some things are different, but I know not to go to Japan and act like an ignorant asshole in the middle of a city. I admire the culture very much, and understand that they have their faults just as Western countries do.

Thanks for sharing your completely irrelevant and

I have no concern for you, your story, or your

Just remember that by expressing your opinion that

support the opinion of my work; you are causing just
as much conflict as you say we do when we obviously
provide an objective opinion to your point of view.

Ah, but some find it hard to forget. And it wasn't that long ago.
Just seems that way to you because you didn't live during that time.
As amazing as Japan seems to you from your books, movies, etc. It
does and always will have a dark side. That of which some are so
quick to forget and some are unlikely to forget.
Don't worship Japan until you understand ALL of it's good AND bad.
If you say you do, you don't.

I know it has it's dark side. Every country on earth has it's dark side and I don't judge it on what I've read in books or seen in movies. I have in fact seen very little movies where Japan is featured, and I know the real place is probably nothing like that.
And of course I don't understand all the good and all the bad about it. I don't understand all the good and bad about my own country (which I love just as much BTW). I've never been there to experience it for myself. I like it. I don't know why. I just do.

All-the-same, remember my cautious tale.
Japan, as a country and a as a culture, is
nothing you imagined it to be. Until you live
there and truly understand the people, you
will never truly understand what I mean.

Look, as much as this may surprise you, I am not going to pack up and move to Japan without first going there. It's on the other side of the world, I don't speak the language, the alphabet seems very hard to learn, it's the last place on earth that I would want to bring my children up in and I'll be honest, from what I know of Japan and it's culture, it's like an alien world to me. Simply because it's so different from what I know. I know you mean well but please don't take me as some Japan obsessed Anime fan who's going to run off to a foreign country without thinking.

My grandparents were missionaries in Japan when my father was young, so they've lived there for several years and all speak Japanese. I've been there three times myself, and was introduced to the culture, food and language long before I got to know anything about anime. Sure, I like a few series and I cosplay (mostly because it has helped make friends, something I'm not very good at), but my family's background in Japan is what's an important part of who I am, not the anime.
