Description
Continuing the seemingly unending theme of "dangerous creatures relaxing," we have a Manticore napping in the sun.
This is part of a project I made for myself this year of going back to old artwork and trying to improve it. The original piece was a Manticore on its back, sunning itself like a kitty cat. But the proportions were all goofy and there wasn't enough definition or shading.
So when I approached the work again, I decided to simplify the pose and do more background to provide more context and reinforce the temporary serenity I wanted.
The fearsome manticore, scourge of the land, dozes in the sunlight. It's mate, in the background, patrols their resting place while their cub, ever energetic, seeks to play. But the bones and intimidating claws of the manticore speak of a creature that, at any moment, can cause untold damage.
Decided not to do wings for this manticore, since it cluttered up the body shape and was too reminiscent of a dragon for my tastes.
