Mostly it was IBM and Intel in these cases.

Wont open in Illustrator CS3 & CS6. Anyone got the same problem?

doctormo In reply to transpalet [2012-08-11 21:51:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, never heard of Illustrator not able to open a simple svg file. You can try Downloading inkscape, opening the file and then saving it as a plain-svg or other format. You could also use inkscape to edit the document too.

Don't forget that this graphic is published under the creative-commons share-alike license. Your derivative work must use the same license and all other sources you use must be compatible. And you should link to here as attribution.

Plus I'd love to see what you do with the work, so send me a link.

wow. that is very good. i know it will probably help me out. maybe it would be a good idea to also include the pins. aka how many pin each port is. im currently taking Network and Database administrator course. and for some reason we have to know the port names and how many pins each one is. Stupid A+ DX

Some times I think the A+ course goes too far, I teach a sysadmin course in 8 weeks and we cover databases, web servers and network infrastructure.

You can check wikipedia for all the pin outs and pin counts.

Ah! Educational artwork! My favorite sub-genre. ^^

I'm not sure which ports are drawn by you,and which others come from the Wikicommons -- but regardless, I'm proud that you've assembled such an incredibly useful and constructive guide (and not just this one, but the other ones you have floating around too) for the purpose of using it in those equally pride-inducing training classes of yours. I hope your pupils appreciate the lengths you've gone to advance FOSS with such spirit and creativity. ^__^

Regarding the ports themselves, I've actually seen quite a number of the older ports recently, since I've been refurbishing some old computers I've adoped from families that no longer want them (one is an old Compaq Presario from 1998, the other an unknown A-Open desktop model and hardware monstrosity that, despite its size, only has a 4GB hard drive installed with a puttering Windows 2K just begging to be put out of its misery.

Both have undergone some modernization surgery, and as soon as the necessary adapters arrive I plan to run experiments testing CompactFlash cards as convenient hard drive replacements for these legacy systems. Still debating which system to try out on the Compaq, but the family I'm giving the finished A-Open to clearly want Ubuntu. ^^

Speaking of which, I don't see card slots in the diagrams above, but I reckon that's for another session (given how many card/disk formats there are already, not even including the several varieties of floppy drives, SuperDisks and the old Iomega ZIP drives).

Yes, I actually have a list of refinements to make in a file that I will get to when I'm not busy writing a course, teaching that course and all the other stuff I'm up to.

Revision 3 is on my blog btw, in case you want to see a more up to date version than the one here.

Wow! And I thought people posted a lot here, but your blog is filled to the brim with suggestions and comments on this. Surprising how hardware seems to bring people together. ^o^

If revising it will take a matter of days, then I actually wouldn't mind applying those refinements for you. I just have to read through all that very carefully first, though, so I can understand what exactly needs to be added/fixed/and so forth.

Ah I see, well here is the list:

PORTS SHEET

* SCSI external ports should be added.
* Mini HDMI should be added
* Ethernet is not RJ45 by 8nc8 (double check this)
* Stereo Jacks also used for S/PDIF (Mini-TOSlink) but with red light.
* S/PDIF Optical is actually TOSLINK connector, S/PDIF is the format.
* DVI-D vs DVI-I perhaps highlighted more
* MIDI is input and output
* Look into adding RCA connector as β€˜S/PDIF Co-axial’
* Are there scaling factors to consider
* Should the USB ports have bolder lines
* Should composite plugs be added to video and audio sections
* Add ExpressCard and all Mass Storage (Flash) Card Slots
* Should ISDN be added, it's an RJ45 connector and looks like Ethernet
* Is there such a thing as a USB/SATA combo port?
* Is there a center black 5.1 suround sound jack?
* Should more icons like the sound jack ones be added for each of the items?
* Need to add special port for USB 3.0 which is taller and has more pins.

Marching orders received (albeit a tad bit late... sorry, rough day...) ^^'

Just so you know, my primary focus is on drawing any new graphics that we need. I'll email you graphics as they get done, but of course a due by is helpful. ^^

I'll likely focus on the cards first since that's what I asked for originally. ^___^

Don't worry about time, I'm teaching the class to get a feel for the work I'm doing writing it, but the aim it to make sure we can teach thousands of system-administrators or just fill in useful knowledge.

So the time is kinda like 11 weeks, but no deadline, that's just when I'll be done with the full course and can spend some time clearing holes like the notes here. For now I'll let them slide.

BTW I've never seen a firewire port here :/

doctormo In reply to raveenz [2009-07-18 17:16:38 +0000 UTC]

Never seen a firewire port? Interesting, you must be using a PC (oldish) because even most laptops now have one of the mini Firewire ports on the the side, though most people don't know they are there.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

raveenz In reply to doctormo [2009-07-18 18:16:05 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, maybe I've seen one of them and I didn't notice that!

Anyway most desktop PCs here have cheaper motherboards (ie: Asrock for 55 U$D), and only there are a few people with motherboards like Asus or Gigabyte with more features like the firewire port included...

doctormo In reply to BiOzZ [2009-07-18 17:27:42 +0000 UTC]

The way Linux USB drivers work is, you take a look at the companies involved in the specification then you match that up to the list of companies with armies of Linux Kernel developers.

Considering Intel is involved, they'll have a driver done in no time, especially since the job is easier with code reuse and modualisation.

I don't know where this myth came from that Linux has bad hardware support. For instance the new intel chipsets for video not even released are already supported by kernel .31 with KMS I believe.

Funny enough I actually know more than a little, just not about usb 3.0

Although you should really come over to the light side, you know, program python or mono for Ubuntu to help humanity be free from monopolies yadda yadda, got the FOSS spiel out the way.

You won't believe how pleased I am to be a programming not programming anything that ever touches windows. It's so freeing and almost all the work is done already.

Well you found one I teach python, ubuntu desktop and systems administration at the local community center here in Boston. I could walk you through some tutorials and theory online via a chat program if your not conveniently near by.

Your first job though is to get yourself an environment from which to learn from. Download and install Ubuntu as a Dual boot if not already. At least then you'll have access to all the dev tools.
