Yeah Annette,... it was indeed the intention to use only the 3 primary pigments alizarin crimson, yellow ochre and prussian blue to create subtle nuances of greys.
I then finally used some neutral tint for the darks to get a stronger feeling of the bodyvolume.

This was a lovely exercise of a series of elephant paintings which all are done rapidly wet in wet with a big mob brush without any presketching...
Obviously thisone got a fairly satisfying anatomy so I gave it a place on my gallery
