UPDATE 10/29: We're still waiting on one judge's results in order for the winners to be announced. Right now, there are about 8 entries tied for 2nd place, so this last judge's results are very important for determining the winners. Contest Introduction/ Basic Information

It's been a while since I've held a contest and I thought since it's finally summer and people have more free time, now would be the perfect time to do so. I've yet to host a contest for my novel Fiction and thought that it was about time I got around to it. After much contemplation and discussion with others, I've decided to make the theme life & death.

Life and death are two very big themes in Fiction and it can be interpreted in many ways. The story takes place in between Victorian London and a dreamworld created by my main character, Daniel Blackburn. Since he is suffering from consumption (tuberculosis), life and death becomes a very important thing to him, since he struggles with it every day (as he finds himself living "between life and death"). When he finally enters his dreamworld through his comatose state, he realizes that it is a perfect point for him between life and death: while there safe in his thoughts, he cannot die, but while in a coma, he also cannot live. For him, life and death also serves as reality vs. fiction: what is more real? Life or death? He also believes that in fiction, one can never truly die and that those preserved in books and fantasy are forever immortal. There are many ways to interpret the life and death end of the theme, whether it be the literal life and death or a more metaphorical sense of it. How you choose to interpret it is up to you entirely and what you'll be doing for this contest!


Contest Rules & Guidelines

Anyone on dA can enter-- you don't need to be a watcher of mine! If you wish to enter the contest and do a drawing, then by all means, please do.

You may submit up to 3 entries for this contest. Please remember, however, that you may only place once even if you submit more than one entry. For example, if you win second place, you cannot also win third place.

Only traditional and digital drawings may be entered in this contest. That means no photos, literature, etc. for this one-- sorry! I will eventually be hosting a literature contest in the future for those who want to submit literature, however.

For this contest, please only draw my characters. While I am all about others' characters and love to support them, I'd prefer this contest to just be for my novel characters.

Please keep in mind the characters' style and the time era (Victorian England). While I don't mind what clothing you choose to draw them in, please make sure to keep it period appropriate. Also, please do not alter hair and/or eye color or length. For female characters, hair may be tied up or kept down-- that's perfectly alright. Please also keep the characters human: no animals, anthro, etc. If you wish to add animals, however, some of the characters have animal counterparts and symbols that you may choose to include!

Judges may not enter, but those who donate prizes may!

All submissions must be created specifically for this contest. No previous art may be submitted.

As always, remember that deviantART's rules are in effect for this contest. No entries breaking any of those rules will be allowed.

There must be at least 10 entries in order for this contest to be judged. If there are less than 10 entries by the time the contest ends, there will be an extension until the minimum is fulfilled.


Deadline

All entries must be in by the 7th of October at 12AM EST

If it's getting close to the deadline and you know you'll need an extension, please send me a note and let me know! We'll work to negotiate a new deadline that's fair to everyone.

Adrian (most definitely, since he serves as "Death" in the story)

Peter (when it comes to wealth and financial power and continuing his bloodline)


Powerless:

Helena (as she had her life taken by her soon-to-be husband; and she had no say in who should could wed)

Ariel (caught in the same situation as Helena, feeling as though she'll never wed who she wants)

In-Between:

Daniel (He feels empowered by being the sort of "god" of his fantasy, but at the same time he feels powerless as he is succumbing to death, and how he knows he was unable to save Helena. However, by feeling he can keep her alive in his work, he feels powerful.)

Rebecca: (She feels powerful by having married into wealth to a family with a good bloodline and name. However, she feels powerless when she discovers her husband is dying and when the truth that his writings were for another woman and he has no inheritance to his name comes out.)

2. What is Rebecca's personality like? How old is she? Does she have intimate knowledge of death, or is it foreign to her?

3. Are there any characters who are musicians--that is, they play violin, piano, guitar, or some other stringed instrument?

2. Rebecca's somewhat of a realist. She can be grumpy at times and want things to go her way. She also loves gossip! She's probably nearest the model of an upper class woman during the era-- she doesn't care too much for the lower class. The only real knowledge she has of death is when Daniel falls ill, and she more than anything fears it. (I hope that helped a tad If not, let me know and I'll explain more!)

3. Not entirely... though I did once have Daniel play violin... so I should say he counts!

Thanks for the responses! Okay, I might be submitting two pieces then. I'm already working on one for Adrian, I'm really excited about how that one is turning out. I like that he's powerful and some of the symbolism related to his character.


I might also do a Daniel piece, because I have this idea brewing about an image of a ribcage tangled up in a stringed instrument. Like the violin is the spine. Maybe Daniel is silhouetted in the background. I know "skeleton" imagery is pretty overt, but I think I can make it beautiful. That one'll probably be in color, so it might take longer. Gotta do some sketches!
