LIFE & DEATH CONTEST
CONTEST OVER-- NO MORE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED
UPDATE 10/29: We're still waiting on one judge's results in order for the winners to be announced. Right now, there are about 8 entries tied for 2nd place, so this last judge's results are very important for determining the winners. Winners will be announced NOVEMBER 7TH, as the judge plans to have all entries scored by then. Thank you for your patience! We're excited to see who wins, as well!
We thank everyone who participated and submitted an entry for this contest! Honestly, it was a much bigger turn-out than I thought it would be and every single one of the entries are gorgeous. It's going to be so hard voting for the 3 winners-- you all deserve to win! Truthfully! I will be gathering the entries and sending them to the judges shortly and we hope to have the results posted within the next few days (as well as the raffle winner). Stay posted, and thank you all again for your wonderful submissions Contest Introduction/ Basic Information
It's been a while since I've held a contest and I thought since it's finally summer and people have more free time, now would be the perfect time to do so. I've yet to host a contest for my novel Fiction and thought that it was about time I got around to it. After much contemplation and discussion with others, I've decided to make the theme life & death.
Life and death are two very big themes in Fiction and it can be interpreted in many ways. The story takes place in between Victorian London and a dreamworld created by my main character, Daniel Blackburn. Since he is suffering from consumption (tuberculosis), life and death becomes a very important thing to him, since he struggles with it every day (as he finds himself living "between life and death"). When he finally enters his dreamworld through his comatose state, he realizes that it is a perfect point for him between life and death: while there safe in his thoughts, he cannot die, but while in a coma, he also cannot live. For him, life and death also serves as reality vs. fiction: what is more real? Life or death? He also believes that in fiction, one can never truly die and that those preserved in books and fantasy are forever immortal. There are many ways to interpret the life and death end of the theme, whether it be the literal life and death or a more metaphorical sense of it. How you choose to interpret it is up to you entirely and what you'll be doing for this contest! Contest Rules & Guidelines
Anyone on dA can enter-- you don't need to be a watcher of mine! If you wish to enter the contest and do a drawing, then by all means, please do.
You may submit up to 3 entries for this contest. Please remember, however, that you may only place once even if you submit more than one entry. For example, if you win second place, you cannot also win third place.
Only traditional and digital drawings may be entered in this contest. That means no photos, literature, etc. for this one-- sorry! I will eventually be hosting a literature contest in the future for those who want to submit literature, however.
For this contest, please only draw my characters. While I am all about others' characters and love to support them, I'd prefer this contest to just be for my novel characters.
Please keep in mind the characters' style and the time era (Victorian England). While I don't mind what clothing you choose to draw them in, please make sure to keep it period appropriate. Also, please do not alter hair and/or eye color or length. For female characters, hair may be tied up or kept down-- that's perfectly alright. Please also keep the characters human: no animals, anthro, etc. If you wish to add animals, however, some of the characters have animal counterparts and symbols that you may choose to include!
Judges may not enter, but those who donate prizes may!
All submissions must be created specifically for this contest. No previous art may be submitted.
As always, remember that deviantART's rules are in effect for this contest. No entries breaking any of those rules will be allowed.
There must be at least 10 entries in order for this contest to be judged. If there are less than 10 entries by the time the contest ends, there will be an extension until the minimum is fulfilled.
Deadline
All entries must be in by the 7th of October at 12AM EST
If it's getting close to the deadline and you know you'll need an extension, please send me a note and let me know! We'll work to negotiate a new deadline that's fair to everyone. Entry Submission/Participation
To enter, just leave a comment on this journal with a link to your entry! Once that's done, I'll add it to the list of entries here on the journal. References
Click on the character's name next to their picture & reference sheet for more details on them.

All pieces will be judged according to how closely applied the theme was, the accuracy of characters, creativity, overall appeal, and skill. Each category will be on a scale from 1-10 and the pieces with the highest scores overall will be determined the winners. Prizes

The theme just centers around life vs. death (or fantasy vs. reality). You can just draw the characters if you want though! The theme is quite loose, so if it's not 100% between the difference of life and death, that's fine!

So do we need to know the story? Is the prompt just draw something relating to life or death?
π: 0 β©: 1
DorianHarper In reply to feavre [2013-07-13 00:50:17 +0000 UTC]
You don't really need to know the story. There are the character profiles if you need ideas of how the prompt relates to the story and characters if that helps, though!

There were so many more expressions that could have been done, as well, but I decided on the basic ones. Though, I would have LOVED a laudanum "drugged up" Daniel expression. That'd have been brilliant (Though Daniel's grumpy face is too adorable!)

I must go and read more of your writing if I wanna do well on this. The characters all look interesting and each has a certain vibe to them, but I can't find any that are deflecting each other... maybe Ariel and Helena. I'm judging only by the looks of them, we'll see after I read your story.Β
I see we have plenty of time to complete our entries. That fills me with glee.

If you click on the names beside the small references there, it will take you to a quick reference page with some quickly glossed over information on them and further references if that helps, as well! (That way you don't need to go through a 100,000 word novel ). If you have further questions from there, I'd be able to elaborate more, as well! I think it just would be easier for you that way

You're welcome!Β
God I already got some awesome ideas from the references; the one I feel most comfortable with is the confrontation of"good" and "bad" death, as it says in Adrian's description. I think I have a few more good ideas... but I think I'll read your novel too, just to get a better insight into them. Btw, Adrian is not a "real" character from Daniel's "real" life, is he?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
DorianHarper In reply to Scurron [2013-06-24 14:12:18 +0000 UTC]
Oh!! I'm glad you were thinking that approach (I snuck it in there hoping someone would!)
And right! Adrian's not fromΒ Daniel's real life-- just the "dreamworld"
π: 0 β©: 1
Scurron In reply to DorianHarper [2013-06-24 15:28:34 +0000 UTC]
Haha, sounds like you thought you hid it very well. Β
The concept of the dreamworld seems interesting to me. Is it just about Daniel's dreamworld while he's in a coma, or does it exist for everybody?Β
