Finally, 30+ hours and a nervous breakdown later a brand spankin' new piece is ready for submission. I actually finnished Saturday, but decided to submit after the holiday, even though most of my fans here are not American.

Before anyone asks: No I haven't seen Donnie Darko, and Yes it is on my list of movies to see.

11x14 paper, which turns out is a lot of space to fill up with a micron pen.

This is just absolutely amazing! I can't believe some people (such as yourself) can do these amazing things with a pen or pencil! I draw...very badly. I paint...a little better, but still not exceptional. It's just hard to believe that there are people out there who can create magnificent works of art like this! You did very, very, VERY well on this, congratulations! And 30 hours is a lot of time to spend on something, so you deserve all the praise you can get! ^_^ I really wish I could do something like this. ::sigh::

This has to be one of the most detailed pictures I've seen in a very, very long time. You did it so well, using just ink and all. It's beautiful.

And I'll admit I thought of Donnie Darko when I first saw this. A Must-watch.

Interesting style...it's like a combination between animΓ© and a 19th-century book illustration.

I think more of The Village than Darko, but I see where people could make that connection.

This piece is amazing! I didn't even notice at first glance that the rabbit was see-through, very nice touch. and her tattoo is cool, too. ^_^ I have seen Donnie Darko, and I agree you should see it. ^^ I admit I did think of Frank (the bunny from DD) at first, but upon closer look, they're really nothing alike. This rabbit does indeed seem to have a feeling of hope attached to him. I would have keeled over after only an hour. O.o

wow.. this is increditable, I can't keep my eyes off al the details, every time I scan over it I find something new! If you don't full view this, you're foolish because this is really pleasing to look at, it seems like there should be a complex story behind it, the beautiful girl, the chained creature, amazing.. really breath taking...

Wow...you are a god of the pen, my good man and an inspiration to the little people who only think they can draw (mainly myself). I love the amount of detail and thought that went into every bit of this piece....and if I'm not mistaken isn't the cross atop the temple Greek Orthodox? Either way, it's a fabulous work of insight and patience.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dpdagger In reply to Ravenwight [2005-07-13 22:16:03 +0000 UTC]

It is an Orthodox cross, though I was thinking Russian Orthodox when I did it, I believe that the Greek Orthodox uses tha same cross. Though now that you mention it, the architecture I drew for the building is very Greek, so that makes perfect sense.

My first thought definitely wasn't Donnie Darko when I saw this- to be honest, it was Beauty and the Beast. Special-me is totally right about the rabbit's eyes, and the girl's eyes for that matter, they really make the piece. Congrats on the DD!

Yes, it is an orthodox cross. The letters on the gravestone are my initials DP just stylized in english, that is how I sign my work. Thanks for the comment.

what is the significance of her tatts? and of the 3 prongs cross type thingo on the tomb?
what is pointilism?
it fully took me ages to work out that she is in a graveyard. i love her style of shirt!!!
so many points i could mention, but i wont. i dont have that much space and i dont wanna make u conceited!
however i will say this, the look in his eyes is perfect, and so odd for such an animal creature thing. without those perfect eyes, it would have looked to be menacing, and your point would be lost.
is this just an extract? if so, is it the centre of the piece?
completly awesome dude!!!
i must point out, i do think i have located a mistake! well, not a mistake as such, but a teeny tiny imperfection. the chain connecting to the top left padlock iis slightly off. one link of the right-hand, lower part is too short or something.
then again, its not like u can bo back and fix it!!
nice work with the transparency!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dpdagger In reply to special-me [2005-07-07 17:04:43 +0000 UTC]

The tattoos are symbolic. Is she giving him the key to her heart lock or his own locks? You be the judge. The cross is just a cross, I saw them all over Russia. The top cross bar represent the plaque they hung over christs head, the middle cross bar is the main bar you see on any cross and the bottom cross bar slanting upward sybolizes those on the right hand of christ ascending to heaven and the left side descending to hell. At least that is how I understand it, someone may want to correct me. Pointilism is actually a style of painting using just tiny dots of color, the most comon example would be Georges Seurat's "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." I think the correct term for a drawing is stippling, but again someone may want to correct me.

Yes there is a chain that seems to come to an abrupt stop into nowhere, that was not intentional, but I am just going to say that it connects into the link of that other chain and then you see there is no mistake.

Thanks for the comment and there you get a big long reply, enjoy.

This is sooo beautiful. The emotion is so focused, the detail is excellent. It's so sad... It's like part of a story that I want to know the rest of. So, what is the back-story here?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dpdagger In reply to Rabbit-eyes [2005-08-08 23:16:41 +0000 UTC]

Sorry it took me so long to reply, only one month late.

As for back-story, the great thing about doing pieces that are just a frozen moment of time it leaves the story entirely up to the viewer. Everyone can relate to the story, in some strange way. But leaving open questions really draws people in like: Does the key open his locks or the lock to her heart? If it opens his locks What will he do? Why was he locked up in the first place? If it opens her lock he is still chained and can he even hold the key? He is a ghost. Everyone interprets it differently based on their outlook. I put a question mark in the title for this reason. some people see the hope, some don't. Does that sound like pretentious bullshit? Probably.

So what does it mean to me? well it is very personal. But I will say this I believe in hope. Thanks for the question.
