Description
After Talk Like a Pirate Day I noted that I have gotten rusty with my gun designs. This is an effort to correct my futuristic weaponry. Sorry no cute girls or x-guys in this one.
First up is coil-gun, or an Electro-Mag: It fires ferro-ceramic darts through a series of circular electromagnets. The darts have clockwise grooves along the length to add a spin and increase stability. the back of the gun is a small swappable power-cell for the magnets, the darts are in a magazine in the handle
The Second is a Plasma pistol (about the size of a Uzi): Since it fired air compressed and heated to the point of plasma, it is of limited use in a vacuum. The odd things sticking out of the back are actually gas canisters that allow limited shots in a vacuum. (there are two taped together with electrical tape) What looks like a magazine is a heavy-duty power-cell.
Goop Gun: it has a Drum Magazine. Designed for capturing fugitives without endangering civilians.
Laser pistol: Lasers are interesting things their Damage is = to the power fed to them. Uses a swappable battery cartridge in the handle.
Sorry if this one is boring.

Meh, I'd probably say the same thing if you'd asked me. It's not like everybody rides unicorns and lives in a skyscraper, but it's home.

Hey, this isn't bad either. Always good to see such things in my opinion. I certainly know I have some characters that would use such things themselves.

great weapon design, like the mix of futuristic tech with "conservative" weapon look. I think it is a more realistic approach.
neat job.

Technically wouldn't the coil gun fire flechettes (particularly if they're stabilised by spinning rather than fins)? The grip looks a little small to hold darts...
Also, if the laser does more damage with more power, does that mean it could be made more powerful by plugging it into a wall socket or attaching a larger battery?

The darts are only slightly longer then bullets flechette is a fancy french method of saying "little dart."
Something like what you are thinking is probably more likely fired from a combat shotgun.

BisectedBrioche In reply to DPRagan [2010-09-22 15:38:08 +0000 UTC]
Nope, flechette is the accepted term for a small dart, particularly when it's fired like a bullet. Although many weapons do have "flechette rounds" (and grenades and mines for that matter).
They were poised to replace bullets at one point, but they were abandoned when it was discovered that their trajectory was too easily diverted.

They are more like slugs in size and shape. Only real difference is materials and the lack of a casing.

the more I see your art, the more it make me think of the rpg Metal Adventures. This rpg let you play a group of space pirates on their starship. It has a retro-futuristic look, and is just really good if you want a bit of fun.
As far as i know, despite its English title, Metal Adventures exist only in French, as it is one of the rare games of French origin. It as not yet been published in other nations, so I don't think you'll try it soon.

They are more inventive than my sci-fi guns. Mine all use the idea that magnetic acceleration canβt be used on an automatic weapon in the assumed tech level, so they all end up looking like Civil War replicas. Kind ofβ¦ Anyway, my rationalizations always get in the always of making certain things.
Some of the notes I use in mine. It was for a space cowboy thing I worked out once. Feel free to shamelessly steal ideas.
The standard bullet is an iron alloy slug mounted on a disposable capacitor. A hammer deforms the capacitor releasing the charge giving the gun enough energy to launch the bullet. Larger slugs and longer barrels result in more force imparted into the slug, leading to pistols that look like theyβre from Dirty Harry and huge barreled rifles. The real reason is to give you that joyful gratuity of falling spent shells.
Pistols are large and clunky but immensely powerful. Remember Hellboyβs guns? Yeah like those.
Rifles are single shot and routinely have barrels that can stretch for over 8β, though most are simply interchangeable. The ammunition can reach relativistic speeds but with a strong magnetic field can be shunted aside easily. Inertial distribution mechanisms are required to keep many from killing anyone standing behind them.
Automatic weapons are only available in multibarrel Gatling gun style. The barrels need to magnetically βcool downβ after each shot. The knock back can be used on some to power a car, it is so immense.

The Mag pistol doesn't have a barrel long enough to quite reach mach-1. A rifle version with a more powerful power-stick would.
In vacuum the Plasma-pistols are reduce to one shot per gas cartridge. In atmosphere the shots are limited to power-cells (probably carbon-nanotube based)

Vortsukoto In reply to DPRagan [2010-09-22 08:09:56 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but you have to worry about dissipation of heat in an atmosphere. Realistic plasma weapons are just high powered flamethrower. Not that there is anything bad with flamethrowers that can vaporize lead.
Part of what I was doing was nerfing firearms to allow more hand to hand in ship boarding actions. That is why rifles are like that. Instead of being a sniper, it was more deadly to be wearing powered armor and swinging a repurposed saw. On the other hand, if you wanted past something unshielded, a gun was a dozen times more deadly than a normal one. A lot of the thought in building these just went into βHow can I take the lethality out of guns and give more to melee weapons?β Lots of the cutting back went into making everything concealable.
If you want ideas for ship based weapons, on the other hand, I have a pile that run on normal-ish physics that are really fun.

High powered FOCUSED flamethrower, and yes you do have to worry about heat in fact, plasma weapons have a lot of ceramics in them.
I have some of those as well, somewhat older thought, check my "Technology and Artifact" Gallery.

Very nice. It's always refreshing to see Sci-fi esq guns that are not "Look we have infinite ammo! 8D" The concepts are very interesting, and I have to ask if you have any designs for large-arms?
