So Fergus being kind turns out to be just as scary as angry Fergus. Huh.

If you think its out of character for Fergus to be drying and nuzzling Nule then you’d be right. Fergus’ compulsive pawing of Nule is more of a self-soothing gesture than anything really for Nule’s benefit.

Fergus was just reliving some of the worst memories of his life. The memories of seeing a friend die horribly and feeling responsible for their death. If Nule had died, it would have opened a can of worms and Fergus would have felt responsible for everything that happened. Even if he had little to nothing to do with the actual death.

Fergus touching Nule and obsessively drying him is Fergus calming himself down from the horrific guilt and terror of moments before. His brain is going

“Look! He’s alive! I didn’t kill him! He’s safe and unbroken- a-and I’ve got him right here! He’s whole! No broken bones! I didn’t kill him,didn’tkilldidn’tkilldidn’tkillitsnotmy FAULT! And now that I have him, I’ll make sure nothing bad happens! Yeah! Everything is fine!”

Of course, Fergus will tell himself he’s doing this for Nule’s sake. In much the same way a frightened child comforts their teddy bear during a thunderstorm. Which makes things much harder for Nule who has to confess what he did….
