Sorry guys. I know that most of you thought Nule was going to wake up to Fergus with the knife. But you gotta cut Nule a break. Waking up to Fergus' ugly face is scary enough for him. Even without a weapon in sight. Plus I'd probably have to rename this comic to 'Horrific Implications: The Graphic Novel' wouldn't I? 
So Fergus manages to wake Nule up. He seems overjoyed to have found Nule safe and in one piece. But considering the confession Nule had planned... plus the loss of the cup, I'm not sure if Nule will be quite as happy to see Fergus now...

is Fergus just not aware of the effects of the things he's doing or does he think about the things he does before he does them and then does the things anyway because he doesn't know what else to do

He really has no idea that his teeth are scary. Its just his teeth. Nearly every race has sharp teeth. Fergus knows he wouldn't ever consider eating a goblin. And he doesn't know a soul who would either. And most of the smaller races he might interact with in his lifetime wouldn't come to that conclusion either.
Stallo keep to themselves mostly, but in general they are on fairly good terms with most (not all) other races. Some of those smaller people might find a Stallo they aren't familiar with intimidating. But they probably won't assume that they'll hurt them for no reason. (unless they were really mangy looking and ran into them in a dark alleyway. But that goes for almost anyone.)
Goblins however are another story. While most stallo have probably met and interacted with a member of a smaller race before, the majority of Stallo will never meet a goblin in their lifetime. Even Reggie, who travels around the south and interacts with smaller races on the daily, has never gotten within a few feet of a goblin before. That is because Goblins are terrified of the Stallo and will avoid interacting with them at all costs. Goblins legitimately believe that Stallo are monstrous and will kill at the drop of a hat. Prejudice really. And while that primal fear is obvious and universal among the Goblins, Stallo would likely not even be aware that such a stigma exists.
Nule wouldn't have dared try to con Fergus to begin with if he hadn't run out of food and been stranded in the north. if he thought he could make the trip back southward without collapsing from hunger he would have done it gladly. But he was starving and desperate times call for desperate measures....
So no, with the exception of moments when Nule goes catatonic or starts begging or crying, Fergus generaly has no idea how scary Nule finds him.
