Please note, I am not referring to Meowth from team Rocket but a wild Meowth and this can apply to the regional forms of Meowth (Some aspect are subject to change so this is focused on the Kantotian/National Meowth).

General the idea is that Ash and co help out a wild Meowth after mistaking it for Team Rocket's Meowth at first playing dumb and acting like a normal Meowth. Meowth takes a shine to Ash and want to a strong Pokémon after seeing his Pikachu in action as it doesn't want to evolve into Raichu and is clearly stronger than a Raichu could be. The backstory for this Meowth is that he was kicked out of his clan by a rival Persian taking over after trying to challenge it but left injured and hurt but somewhat recovered until it came along Ash and Co.'s path.

Meowth would at first travel with them by mainly following them for a bit and foiling Team Rocket's schemes from the shadows and even help Pikachu escape, until one attempt by Team Rocket forces the Meowth to make his presence known surprising Team Rocket even TR's Meowth that a fellow Meowth was ruining their plans. Meowth asks his wild counterpart to join their side and catch Ash's Pikachu to give it to the boss but the Meowth declines and tells Meowth that is a joke to the other Meowth around the world as he depends on traps and gimmicks to deal with Ash, is nothing than weak scum. Which enrages Meowth and challenges him to a battle via Meowth-on-Meowth, its pretty much one side as it show that the wild Meowth is strong than TR's Meowth as it was able to use moves Pay Day, and Thunderbolt which it managed to perfect after seeing Ash's Pikachu use a few times.

Ash's Pikachu and Meowth managed to blast off Team Rocket with a double Thunderbolt and afterwards Ash offers Meowth to join his team and Meowth greatly accepts as he found his new clan. Ash trains Meowth with Pikachu to help it use Thunderbolt and it's other moves like Pay Day, and Fury Swipes.

Once Ash comes home, Delia takes a shine to Ash's Meowth and vice versa but it want to continue getting tougher. Ash offers Meowth to stay with his mom and Mimey or travel with him as he wanted Meowth to have choice but Delia comments she might not be as much of a trainer like her son but she is willing to help Meowth and plus he can battle the wild Rattata/Raticate and Pidgey/Pidgeotto, and Spearow that try to steal from her garden to protect it. Meowth attempts but it wants to still battle with Ash occasionally which is acceptable and Ash agrees to those terms before leaving with Pikachu.

Now Meowth now nicknamed by Delia as "Meowthie"/"Meowie" as he spends time sleeping around the Ketchum household when not protecting Delia's garden or with Ash for a bit to compete in battles. When she visited Ash in Alola and brought along Meowth, it formed a bit of rivalry/brother kinship with Ash's Litten after it took his favorite spot aka Delia's lap and their battle against Team Skull with Litten/Littie. When Ash traveled back home with his class, Meowth and Litten spent their time training and practice fighting against some wild Beedrill with Meowth showing off it's newest move, Shadow Claw with Litten tries to learn but never does due it's limited time with Meowth.

During the Manalo Conference, Meowth cheers Ash on and especially his fellow feline, Torracat during the Kukui battle where it finally evolves after the battle with Incineroar and fainting at the same time like in the anime.
