Description
Finally finished this, put something like 50-60 hours into thisI really wanted to do a run cycle since i wan't too happy with my old walk cycle:dracophobos.deviantart.com/art…
I wasn't sure what animal to work from when doing a raptor (which is EXTINCT so no reliable reference material XD)
SO i ended up settling with ref'ing off of were horses trotting, and I just adjusted the leg anatomy to fit better. It was a lot of work, but I'm glad how he turned out in the end!
Done for the character cycle contest for theAnimators
character drawn and coloured in GIMP 2.8, bg in photoshop
32 frames, 60fps
EDIT: changed the bg and darkened the character~

This is a really smooth animation and a well done cycle. If you let me, I'll do a small feedback on animation itself for future notes, should you need something to keep in mind.
- The cycle is good, but for some reason it looks like one leg is going faster than the other whenever it comes to moving ahead and making a step. When you make a cycle, unless the character is limping, it shouldn't happen, always best to check the amount of frames you add there (if it is the same amount and it's just a slowdown of my internet, then my bad)
- the torso looks like it's stuck in place, as if it's held by it while allowed to try and run on a treadmill. I can see that their body is made of metal, so it's a bit of a tough one to figure out in my head how to fix.... hmmm... I think the best I can suggest is in the future to avoid such precise placing of the torso and let it go up and down abit more, making the steps weigh a lot as a result, or even back and forth to show that they're trying to to keep own weight on the specific leg just a little. Even when having a run like this, gotta keep an impression that they're not falling down due to loss of balance on any frame.
I think that's all I can point out, I hope this helps if you don't mind the feedback

I really loved this one, specially because it's a dinosaur
You are improving a lot in your animations!!

Aaahahahahah you and your dinos
Well at least it's better than my last cycle

It looks good, although a little stiff, I recommend for next time adding a bit of "bounce" to each step, it gives a little weight to the creature and helps to make it look less floaty... so when the foot hits the ground the body should drop down a bit with it, then bounce back up again as both legs are in the air and back down again onto the next foot, it may take a few extra frames but I think that little addition will help improve a lot

hahaahaha ya bugger
nah he only fits 2 of 3, none of my babbies have all 3, it'd be overkill and I'd implode XD

You... redrew every frame of that animation...
You are insane!
If it was entirely organic I would understand the need, but... it's a machine! Parts don't deform as much so normally people would opt to just draw the segments and tween them. Especially since you chose the perfect orthographic side view. It would have taken 5 hours at most
It does look great, don't get me wrong, but it drives me crazy just imagining you drawing those frames when you could have just tweened it 10 times faster with possibly better results.

ohooo but is not machine, is golem
lifeless material imitating lifffffffffe
also, i did copy my tweens over, but I had to redraw the legs so they didn't overlap

I still think it's overkill. Golems are still made out of rigid materials and I you could always add a bit of a wobble or distortion to a regular tween to make it appear softer.
That's a still a week and a half of standard work hours for a walk cycle which should have taken you a day.
And you could combine it with bone animation too if you wanted to add a lot more bending and deforming.
I mean, I know frame by frame is superior to making things appear lifelike, but there are times it should take a backseat, unless you have way too much free time on your hands.
Also, the way it is, if you had realized you made a mistake in the weight distribution, you would have to redraw huge chunks of it. And if you tweened it you could have used the extra time to mess with the feel of the walk cycle (like making the whole body bounce up or down, with the head staying at the same height, similar to the way birds and some lizards run). But with the completely frame by frame you have now, you can't adjust it without a lot of redrawing
Here, look what I could do with ~8 hours with pretty much just tweens and bone animation. And I was mostly experimenting with the software, instead of knowing exactly what I was doing.
I respect the frame by frame but I would advise giving the alternative a go. Combining the two is where the real magic is though.

This is just so crazily smooth and well done ahhh
I think you did really well on the legs considering you didn't have much reference material
