Description "There was a vast emptiness...desolate...lonely...a void lay before my eyes. From my will, I birthed my children; Giratina, guardian of Life, Palkia, ruler of Space, Dialga, master of time, Uxie, embodiment of knowledge, Mesprit, bestower of emotion, and Azelf, the overseer of Will. I led my children to create the universe, lending them fragments of my own being to craft it from. Now my gaze rested upon this wonderous field, but still something was missing. I had given life to my children, why not more?
With this thought, I gave life to three titans; Groudon of the Land, Kyorge of the Sea, and Rayquaza of the Sky. These three put their powers to use and crafted various worlds, but they could not cooperate most times, and many of these worlds were unbalanced. I urged them to craft one last one in which they would all live. They could see that to live together, they most set boundaries to what they created for this planet. Groudon crafted the land masses, Kyorge filled the oceans, and Rayquaza filled the skies. I wanted them to share this world as their home, so I let them live their lives as I turned to another goal. I could not have foreseen what would happen next.
Giratina had set forth a plan to throw this new world into chaos. He urged Groudon and Kyorge into a battle that would last centuries. I had intrusted my children to live without my constant observation, and this is what would happen? I could not allow Giratina to go unpunished for this, but what could I do? I decided to banish Giratina into the next world, but with Life gone, would chaos reign?
Rayquaza took it upon himself to quell the battle between Groudon and Kyorge, and the two tired titans feel into a deep sleep, resting beneath earth and sea. With peace returning to this young world, I crafted three more children, Lugia, Regigigas, and Ho-oh, and prepared to punish my renegade son. I banished him to a spiritual world, where I decided he would reign over Death, while Ho-oh would be given reign over Life in his stead. I sent Lugia and Regigigas to reside over Sea and Land until the rightful rulers would awaken and take their rightful places. With matters settled, I gave the new world my personal blessing; Mew, a young and innocent life who would have the gift to bring more creatures to this world. This creature would not be blessed with the longevity of the children I birthed, but they will have this world for themselves. They will grow...they will learn...they will live. I decided to let this world grow, and turn my attention to other matters."

There...not perfect, but how else could I try to describe the views, life, and decisions of a god? And yes, I do give legendaries genders. For instance, I personally view Kyorge as female while Groudon is a male.

Sure thing. Well, it's a good interpretation of what animal he is (instead of a goat or something stupid like that), and a good backstory to boot.

Not an awfully original comment on my behalf, but this is the best concept for Arceus I have ever seen. The idea of a deer is really unique. I might have made a few changes to the story, maybe saying that Arceus crafted Groudon from magma, Kyogre from deep-sea pressure and Rayquaza from the air itself, that Arceus witnessed Mew evolve from that that was on the Earth and that in the absence of Kyogre, Groudon and Rayquaza, Lugia, Regigigas and Ho-oh evolved, as though to answer their absence, as it says in the histories and timelines, but excellent work still. Thought of doing a full body version?

Dragga In reply to SargeMcCluck [2009-04-22 01:59:07 +0000 UTC]

I've not specified how they were created, have I? I wanted Arceus to be the mastermind behind all the legendaries. Think of him as the one setting the stage for everything before sitting back and watching it all unfold.

And no, I've not been too concerned with the full-body, thanks to my lack of ability with quadrapeds.

First of all, this picture is AMAZING. What animal did you base Arceus on? And the story in the description was AMAZING! A lot of it was the way I thought the mythology of PokΓ©mon was, too. Like Arceus creating the legendaries. But I never thought of Regigigas and Lugia taking over land and sea from Groudon and Kyogre, and Giratina originally being the guardian of life! Also, an idea I've always had, maybe it could fit in with your ideas, too, since you never brought these two up, I always thought Cresselia was the guardian of good dreams and Darkrai was the guardian of nightmares.
Second, I always pictured the legendaries with genders, too, actually.
The way I've always seen it, Articuno is female, Moltres is female, Zapdos is male, Mewtwo is male, Mew could go either way (I don't have trouble seeing it as a female, and I don't have trouble seeing it as a male, either), Raikou is male, Entei is male, Suicune is female, Lugia is male, Ho-oh could go either way, Celebi is female, I picture the Regis as either male or genderless, Latias and Latios are of course female and male, respectively, Kyogre could go either way, Groudon is male, Rayquaza is male, Jirachi is male, Deoxys is male, Uxie is male, Mesprit is female, Azelf is male, Dialga is male, Palkia is male, Heatran is male (despite being either in the game), Regigigas is male or genderless, Giratina is male, Cresselia is (of course) female, Manaphy is male, Darkrai is male, Shaymin is female, and Arceus is male. (Never realized how many legendaries there were until I just made this list. xD)
Of course, the show confirmed that there's more than one Lugia, and I specifically remember a character saying "Wow, it's an Articuno!" once, instead of "the Articuno" or just "Articuno" showing that there are more than one of legendaries, so I guess they could all come in either gender. (Except Latias, Latios, and Cresselia, obviously. And I honestly can't imagine a female Darkrai at all, either, since I think of Darkrai as Cresselia's opposite... Since Cresselia is female, Darkrai must be male.) But for the sake of mythology, with only one of each of these, those are the genders I imagine. I only imagine the Regis as possibly being genderless.

Dragga In reply to Xiria [2009-04-01 02:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Wow, sorry I let this get buried for so long.

Arceus was based on a deer, actually. I figured the deer was better than the horse, as they are more linked to the combination of grace, frailty, beauty, and power. This take on the mythos was a joint project between ~sandragon13 and myself, and the roles were chosen to suit our own personal canon and what the games/anime have shown. For Cresselia and Darkrai, we have both as Moon Deities, with Cress representing the crescent moon, and good dreams, under Rayquaza, and Darkrai representing the new moon and nightmares, while serving as a powerful Grim Reaper of sorts under Giratina. You could view their phase of the moon as a symbolic of their natures, as the crescent shows that there is a glimmer of light even in the dark, while the new moon is former light now enveloped in total darkness, and to tie in the games and the anime's depiction of Darkrai we gave him a good personality (the hidden moon) and an evil personality (the eveloping darkness).
Gender hasn't been dwelled on too much, honestly. Palkia and Dialga are particularly bothersome to me, as I had originally viewed Palkia as the brash sister to Dialga's calm brother role. I'm fond of them being of opposite gender, just to add to their contrasts, even though I'm sure people would see reason to avoid labeling either as female, given Palkia is pink and represented with a pearl, and Dialga is represented by a diamond. On the other side, Palkia as a brash male works just as well with Dialga being the calm, observant female.
Heatran and Lugia are interesting cases, too. I think of Lugia as similar to Mothra from the Godzilla movies, laying the egg that will be it's reincarnated form, passing on knowledge and experiences gained from each life cycle to its newly hatched "self". Heatran, I'd consider a Hive Mind God. There are many, and while they may have slight differences in behaviour and gender, but still being part of one collective consciousness. Essentially, Heatran is Legion.

...phew, that was a lot wasn't it?

Hmmmm... I like your take on Pokemon mythology. What I dislike about the games is that they keep contradicting myths, but you do a very clean job of tying it all together.

I think it would help if you gathered all the text for your myths and put it into one single fanfic deviation. I mean, what you've got here just... works, and I want to see what else you've written on the topic.

That's a seriously good idea you came up with there OoO like for serious. I do like the picture, don't get me wrong. But the story... was muuuch better.

I'm just wondering though, did you forget some lendendaries purposefully? or did you just... ya know, forget?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dragga In reply to Ericanii [2008-04-01 22:21:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. ^^ The back story is a joint effort between ~sandragon13 and myself, and I put it with this picture since Arceus is the start of it all and whatnot.

And I left some legendaries out intentionally, either because I simply hadn't done an origin for them, or I hadn't worked one out. The guys I consider the gods of the Pokemon world, and the ones I left out are kind of like titans. It's got kind of a...mythological sense to me, and I like playing off it.

Wow. That's a wonderful interpretation of the process in which Arceus created the legends and the universe. What about the trios, the birds and the dogs? Did they come in later as a result of Mew, and therefore have no importance? And I would have liked to see a bit about Darkrai; my personal image of him is the devil to Arceus' god. But my thoughts aside, this is really a great concept. :3

Dragga In reply to bevveh [2008-01-14 01:46:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you kindly. ^^ I'm actually working on the origin of the birds, and for the dogs, I'll probably emphasize one of the existing theories that I've found favor in. Hmm...I think I've done a bit about Darkrai's origin in my Giratina concept, but I'm not sure.
