Description
Alternative version of the Sleeping Beauty final scene. Take a close look to see why. I consider the old Disney 50's Maleficent the very first dragon that inspired me when I was a kid. Thanks to her, I started to show interest in dragons, even though she is not a real one. I hope you guys like the picture, at least as much as I enjoyed doing it!Btw, I'm working on a Patreon account, so this picture will be available there as wallpaper at hi-res without watermarks, so please stay tuned until I announce it! Thanks guys!

When I was little, I always got upset when I saw Maleficent lose.

Maleficent has always been one of the driving forces behind my obsession with dragons starting as a little one. I freaking love this.

Amazing composition, and story. Very meta and genre savvy title too. Hopefully she is more beautiful as a woman.
Because as a dragon she is Powerful. lol

This is absolutely amazing. Also, I noticed that she scorched Aurora's tower room as well!

YEAH! Congrats on the DD for this! I also first got into dragons because of that movie. When half the kids in the theater were trying to hide under their seats when Maleficent turned into the dragon, I was on the edge of mine, mesmerized.

Maleficent was who got me into fantasy and dragons. I love the original Disney Sleeping Beauty. The Maleficent film from a few years back was such a wasted opportunity and a patently obvious cash grab. They were simultaneously trying to bank on people coming to see the most popular Disney villain, yet the character in the film with the same name was nothing like her. She didn't even turn into a dragon, for crying out loud! That Maleficent was indecisive, sentimental, and just plain boring. She had nothing of the power and authority of the original Maleficent. Heck, the Maleficent in Kingdom Hearts was a better take on the character than the live action film. I'm so sick of people trying to make classic baddies into "sympathetic villains." Sympathetic should never go in front of villain! History is full of people who were just plain evil. But the animated Maleficent was magnificently evil. She relished in it, always found a way to twist the dagger, and was fiendishly wicked. I loved hating her, she was just so good at being bad. The scene where she taunts Prince Phillip was so brilliant. She's mocking him, rubbing salt in the wound, and making sure he has no hope left, yet she's speaking with such elegance. The visuals combined with Tchaikovsky's music, Eleanor Audley's performance, it's just so perfect and dastardly at the same time. As a kid, I didn't really appreciate it, but when I watched it again as an adult, my response was, "You magnificent bastard." The thing about the animated Maleficent was that she commanded your respect. The live action Maleficent? Ha! She's just a pathetic attempt at manipulating the emotions of the audience, nothing more. And they even put her in leather pants! Maleficent should never wear leather pants.
Sorry for the rant. I just hate the live action Maleficent so much. And Angelina Jolie was robbed of the chance to play a great villain, too! She would have been epic as Maleficent, but instead, she got a pathetic script that was all over the place, a character who was inconsistent and indecisive, and didn't get to turn into a dragon.
This picture you've made is great. One thing that I really like is that the wings look the right size. The dragon in the animated film had wings that were purely vestigial. I'm glad you scaled them up.

Yes, but it's still a version that has her turning into a dragon, ergo it is superior to the live action version. Also, I the moment she turned into a dragon, the seven or eight year old me went from being terrified of her to cheering her on and shouting for her to "eat the prince!" so this picture kind of appeals to little boy who gets a big grin on his face whenever he sees a dragon causing all kinds of mayhem and destruction.
Seriously, I was really into dinosaurs as a kid, but I'd never heard of dragons up until then, so getting to see Maleficent turn into what was, in my mind, a fire breathing dinosaur with wings was one of those moments that went on to shape the rest of my life. It will always be one of my favorite memories. That sequence in Sleeping Beauty is, in my opinion, the best Disney ever made. The way the tension builds, the animation, the use of Tchaikovsky's music, it all blends so well together to create this truly epic battle. The use of heat ripples when Maleficent transforms really sells how hot those flames are, the way Phillip just starts desperately flailing the sword as he's back up against the edge of the cliff, how he barely manages to keep from falling over it, even the way Maleficent (in dragon form) tenses up before she tries to pounce on him, only for that momentum to get interrupted when the sword impales her, it's all superb. And the thing is, as an action sequence, it really shows the right way to frame a battle. Shaky cam and other things in modern films just make fight scenes confusing to watch, not epic. If I ever do films, I'm going to look to that sequence from Sleeping Beauty for pointers, because even after all these years, it stands up so well, in my view. It has never grown old for me.

Nice! Also take references from artists you like, see how they do it, maybe you are not able to do a whole rendered illustration, but if at least you say "hey, that color scheme this person is using, I can do it too!", that's a step

So, the fairies are barbecued, the Prince's sword is shattered, and he's likely going to be next. Not to mention the tower is aflame, specifically the highest room, meaning Maleficent likely started with roasting Aurora in her sleep. Am I missing anything?
