Description I finally finished! This is for my dear dA pal . He proposed an art trade about a month ago, and asked me to draw something from any of the stories by Isaac Asimov I had read. Far, sorry this looks like the illustration of a pulp magazine, but I tried! I suppose you already know by the title which story I chose, and I hope you had guessed somehow before glancing at it.

I'm sure most people who read the story pictured Multivac differently (my brother told me several times that Multivac isn't a humanoid robot) but well, I had to make it appear alive somehow since it *did* bring all the universe to life in the end. [Also, a station hundreds of kilometers wide holding a sun wouldn't look too artistic, would it? ]
At Far's request, I initially thought of drawing a particular scene from the story, but then I realised that the only central character is Multivac, and that there are no specific scenes which mark a decisive moment per se, so I thought of designing something like the cover of the story in general.

I don't think it necessary to explain this, but just so you know, the Hourglass nebula that is below the robot's left hand is supposed to be an allegory of time, which is an important factor in he story. The coloured band that divides the earthscape from space is another symbol for time and the speed of light. And the sun represents, of course, the rebirth of everything, Multivac's gift to us.

Well, Far, I hope you're not completely discontented with it! At least I had a lot of fun in the process, so thanks for the encouragement!

If you ever read the entire bible...highly unlikely that all of humanity would create an intelligent being obsessed with blood and incest.

That is epic. The robot reminds me of the style they have in IRobot, the movie.

Isaac Asimov.

Definitely one of the writers that GREATLY influenced the entire Genre of Science Fiction and probably even "co founded" a new era of Science Fiction.

When i heard, that they would turn "I, Robot" (which essentially is just a collection of shortstories) into a movie, i was rather... hmmm... "doubtful" about the outcome...

But in the end, they really managed to create a good movie.

I really like the background in this one.. .the spacial area in the lower right as well as the city-like structures in the upper left corner (especially those!).

But may i ask, what media you used here?

Thank you very much! Glad to see another Asimov lover!
I couldn't agree more. One of the things I liked about him was his open (and very well founded) self-confidence that bordered on arrogance.

The originality and ingenuity of his stories have no equal, indeed.

And yeah, I, Robot was great. And what about Bicentennial Man? I enjoyed it lots, though I haven't read the novelette.

I used watercolors.

Just read this story - it's absolutely fantastic.

I might draw something with it as well. A short comic, or something. Obviously it'd be very hard to draw the more abstract parts of the story, such as telepathy, and the virtual reality where Man lives for it's final millenia before fusing with the computer.

Your view on it is very good!

Dragonfly22 In reply to UncarvedWood [2010-01-12 17:32:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're right! The more abstract parts are difficult to illustrate, which is why I went with something very general instead. Thanks very much for your comment and please show me if you do that illustration.

Well, Far, I hope you're not completely discontented with it!

WHO ARE YOU KIDDING!! This is awesome. I love the symbolism you've incorporated in the picture (and may I say you did a great job with the cityscape. Also, Multivac-as-a-humanoid-robot makes a lot more sense in an illustration than Multivac-as-a-giant-hunk-a-steel) - but what I like most is that it happens to illustrate one of my top three Asimov stories of all time. You rock. Thank you, Romy.

I'm now feeling terribly guilty, because *my* end of the trade is still in black and white, because I'm not yet contented with it. You'll get it either by the end of the year, or early next...

Yay, he liked it!! *does frenetic dance and trips*
And somehow I got the feeling that you'd love the story I chose,it's just so amazing. Mr. Asimov himself declared it among his favs in the prologue of his The best of Asimov. I'll continue reading him cause he's that good.
So really, thank *you* for introducing me to it and all.

And haha, nevermind that! I know you're always busy drawing crazy & awesome stuff. You can't interrupt a genius at work, so take your time.

I just love this so much, how you can see the gears in his head. And the eye nebula, great addition.
