There are sites where a person can download a model and import it into whatever 3D modeling program they use. The models are free since Paramount owns the rights to Star Trek, so the people that make these cannot, by law, charge money for them.
It's simply, at that point, a matter of positioning and lighting the model.
Then I do use Photoshop to put in things like the starscape background and any "Special Effects" (Phaser Beams, Explosions, etc.
