Yes of course - I read your journal and somehow I became really interested in the method. I did a bit research because I had never heard about this form of art before. And now I'm so in love with it that I'm trying to get one of these starter kits on ebay to try it out^^
Thank you so much for broadening my horizon!

You are so very welcome. I'm glad I could help.
You'll fall in love with it, it is so much fun and so therapeutic. Every picture is unique and the patterns the heat from the iron creates are stunning.
Have fun! xxx

Thank you so much^^
I hope I'll get one of the irons via ebay. My fingers are already nervous because I want to try it out - and the new irons are so expensive for a poor student *lol*

jeez man this a nice effect ( i think thats the first time a piece of art has ever made me say jeez as well.) where do u usually exhibit. theres an excellent venue in brighton called the basement but i was thinking id need to get some quality artists together first to hire it. uve got a lot of quality and varied stuff.

DragonTreasureArt In reply to danpurcell [2006-06-02 20:38:28 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever tried wax painting? It's good fun man. If you're interested I put a link about it at the bottom of my journal.
I don't really exhibit anywhere because I'm always too worried I won't make enough money to cover the hiring costs (I know that's a really cowardly thing to say, but you know how it is. Rent is more important than gallery space). However I plan on spending a good amount of time over the summer rediscovering how good oil painting can be, so the Brighton thing sounds interesting for sure. Do you live in Brighton? Let me know what the cost for hiring is and I'll see if I can get some other quality artists together.
Cheers,
Ella

danpurcell In reply to DragonTreasureArt [2006-06-03 09:09:11 +0000 UTC]

no i havent tried. im not sure if Ive got space anywhere to try it. Illustrations mainly the thing i do although i do pastel, spray paint and paint sometimes. im self taught and dont really know how to do anything but draw. yeah i live in brighton- ive been there about half a year now but havent exhibited yet. i exhibited in norwich but it was only 15 pounds for the week (each) and i got that back by selling small prints (as i like to keep hold of my originals). brighton exhibiting is expensive. its 240/280 quid a day. i was thinking if there were 28 artists (as the basement is huge- there were about 20 artists in an exhibition i saw and they said they hadnt even opened it all up). 28 artists at 20 quid each would be enough for a weekend exhibition and it would also be worth it to have a opening party there on the saturday night. its a way away as I need to get some artists together. i was going to gather various emails and then sort it out when theres enough interest.

DragonTreasureArt In reply to danpurcell [2006-06-03 09:52:43 +0000 UTC]

Well count me in that sounds like an excellent idea. Why not make it a Friday night private view and invite artist magazines and small gallery curators. Always worth a shot Keep me posted.
I'm like you, I hate parting with my work. I become too attached to everything I create, even when I'm making commissions, by the end I don't want to hand them over! Not exactly the sign of a successful artist ahe?!
Wax painting doesn't take up much room actually. All you need is a table, some glossy card, wax and an iron. I used to make my wax paintings on the kitchen table at one of the flats I lived in!
At some point when we sort out the Basement thing I'll bring the wax supplies with me and you can have a go.

all this wax stuff is truely awesome. I must try doing some somehow, though it'd probably just mess up. *sigh* this is excellent though (as usual). I love all the colours in these wax things, they look so brilliant.

that's a gorgeous piece of work! How excatly did you create it? You wrote that you used wax impression; would you be able to explain that technique to me? thanks

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DragonTreasureArt In reply to angie4450 [2005-06-23 22:53:24 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, no problem.

It's called Encaustic Wax Painting. You use an iron (like the kind you iron shirts with) to melt the wax, which comes in lots of yummee colours. You melt the wax onto the iron and glide it across glossy non-absorbent surfaced paper. You can see the shape of the iron head is in this image repeatedly, but no one realised it's an iron head. Depending on how you apply pressure with the iron depends on the marks you make, You can use the side of the iron like a knife to cut slices into the wax to make grass or lined effects. Also you can buy different styluses, like miniature iron head shapes, brushes and hot tips for doing detailed work. It's tonnes of fun. If you do a search on google or one of the search engines it'll tell you where you can buy the stuff. I'd definitely recommend it but, beware, it is exceptionally addictive!!
