Description
Weelll... uh, this is a vaguely New Years themed picture. It's also half of my Monster Girl of the Month submission for January.
(The first one was supposed to be posted at midnight on the 1st... but I was doin' stuff. XD
Still not up yet... going for the 31st, now.)
Anyway, this one was to be posted on the official start of the year of the dragon, so I got that right, at least.
...I think. XD
Anyhow, Protaea doesn't really look monstery enough to me to be the only submission of the month, though that was rather intentional. I wanted her to be more of a, well, a dragon.
And I wanted her to look like a creator goddess.
And there's more than enough "monster" in the other image.
...I dunno about the background here, but... I know I don't feel like changing it right now. XD
Sick and tired =drawitout is rambling. Woo.

I think the glowing fingernails might be my favorite part, too.
But then there's the eyes and the face and the ears and the ...horns? antennae? uh. yeah. and the hair. and the feet/paws. and the hips. and that TAIL, oh my. I just love it.

Well... they just sort of... happen, to be honest.
I get an idea, and I draw it out. Often, I'll refine it or make a few small changes afterward, but my species usually stay pretty true to their first concept art. c:

How does this not have more comments? This is GORGEOUS!
I love everything about this; first, the pose is so beautiful. Not only does it have motion, but it looks so believable, like she had been walking and then paused to react [if that makes any sense at all]. Her form is so sleek and flowing, I almost forget that she has human anatomy, because she looks like the form was meant for her species alone, as if humans were never part of the equation. I absolutely love the way her tail curves to the side, with the hair flowing so elegantly to the ground; it just looks so wonderful!
And I think it looks "monstery" enough x3. Monsters don't always have to be ugly, disturbing or unusual; they can be perfectly beautiful and still be monsters, at least in my opinion. While I tend to make my monsters pretty creepy looking, every once in a while I make one that's not, although they've never been as lovely as Protaea, here.

Oh, thanks so much!
That's exactly what I was going for! She was walking through what isn't much more than empty space, and stopped when she found a spot that she considered suitable to build more of her budding world in. One thing I really want to do is have my original creatures look believable in their own right, rather than a mix of an existing species and a human, so that is really thrilling to hear. Flowing hair is pretty much my favourite thing to sketch, and I've found it really relaxing to work with in digital media, too. c:
I'm glad she has enough of that feel to her, then. I have a fair share of bizarre monsters and characters in my gallery, as well. I do agree with you, I find beautiful and frightening to be quite a wonderful combination, personally.
Thanks so much, again. Your comment has honestly made my day.

Painting all the soft glows in this was so fun, I really enjoyed it. n_n
I coloured the lines for this traditionally a few nights after, too, and liked how it turned out... but I don't want to bug people by submitting the same lines consecutively, heh.

I think you pulled of the goddess appearance nicely. I really like how you drew her hair and tail!

I'm glad you think so. I really enjoy drawing flowing hair like that. n_n

Thank you! I'm just glad I'm able to enjoy working digitally, now. I hope I can keep improving.
Yeah, the background... I thought: "hmm, I want her to be somewhere... but... I don't really want her to be anywhere," because I wanted her to be creating it herself.
I think it will be much more fun (and economical XD) to work on detailed backgrounds digitally than traditionally.
But simple ones are rather fun, too. I can't imagine how long getting a gradient like this one would take using my markers. @_@

You're welcome! ^^ Oh yeah, it's really fun to see you getting into the digital world. I have no doubt. You'll easily get better on it <3 LOL It took me a while to figure out how to do digital, also it took me a very long time to use Pixelmator 2 for it's pen tool and exclusive use on the Mac
LOL Well, there is a tool that makes gradient in an instant |D every Photoshop software has it

Yes, I used the gradient tool in this one, then I made a separate layer for the bit of galaxy around her hand.
Gradients: 20 seconds in PS, estimated 2-4 hours with markers.
