if i use a long shutter i dont need to use a low f number? should I? ...for a basic shot
long shutter = more light
low F-stop number = more light

high F number means smaller opening less light and wider depth of field?

or for motion use it both on high? o what ?

It depends on the lighting situation. If you use a long shutter, and you're in a very dark place, you might still need to use a low f number.

Yes, you're right long shutter and low f-stop numbers will both allow more light to go into the camera.

Again, for motion you'll want to use a faster shutter if you want to capture or stop the motion. You might need to lower your f number to allow yourself to make this adjustment to the shutter.

you're slightly confused. there is no "depth of focus". it's called "depth of field". focus has no depth. field--meaning the area that is in focus--has. you get more things in focus when the depth of that area increases, but you cannot speak of depth of focus; something is either in focus or not.

I wasn't confused, it was just a typo. Thanks for commenting, the tutorial was recently updated.

Sorry to disagree with you, but you say in the tutorial that the f number is a fraction of the lens diameter.

It's actually the fraction of the focal length of a lens, not the diameter of the maximum aperture.

Thus, if you have a 80mm lens at f8, then the aperture diameter is 10mm.

But other than that, it's a good tutorial. Good information and written in an easy to read manner.

I don't really know exactly how that works, I was just going by what my teachers had told me.

I guess what confuses me is if I have two 80mm lenses, one has a diameter of 77, and the other 58... how can the fraction be the same at f/8?

Tiberius47 In reply to drawnfreak [2007-02-25 01:10:30 +0000 UTC]

F/8 means that the size of the aperture is 1/8th of the focal length. It's not the actual diameter of the lens, but the opening in the aperture. An 80mm lens at f/8 has the aperture set to make a hole 10mm in diameter.
