Description
I really wanted to draw this head shot of this character and I'm really happy of how it came out. This character is the Unnamed from the historical novel of Alessandro Manzoni, The Betrothed (orig. Italian: I promessi sposi).
For any of you who doesn't know The Betrothed is one of the most beautiful work of the Italian literature.
It is the story of a young couple of lovers, Renzo and Lucia, whose wedding is impeded by a powerful and arrogant nobleman, Don Rodrigo, who has took a love interest for Lucia (not really love actually but more like of a miserable whim). But this is merely the begging and Renzo and Lucia will have to face many more bigger obstacles until their love will finally at last prevail.
The Unnamed is introduced near the half of the novel.
The reason why he is called the Unnamed is because Manzoni asserted that he written a story based on some real facts, discovered by himself, in an ancient document written by someone else who omitted to identify more accurately the Unnamed.
In the novel he is depicted as an immensely powerful and feared criminal; Don Rodrigo enlists his help for capturing Lucia who is hiding into a convent.
However the events will take a totally unexpected turn because the Unnamed is in the process of a deep crisis of conscience, having grown more and more unhappy with his wicked ways.
The meeting with Lucia, a kind and pious girl, will act as a catalyst, allowing the Unnamed to finally understand the errors of his way and allowing him to transform into a new man, dedicated till he last of his days to remedy all the evil done.
The Unnamed is by far the most beautiful and interesting character in the novel and I wanted to made a tribute to him.
