Sometimes, a legend droid rarely gets featured on anything else, other than the hasbro toy line. But this droid was included in more features. Such as a lego toy, appearing in the LEGO animated series and even in the Star Wars encyclopedia.
When this droid was made by hasbro, a lot of people mistook him for G8-R3. This is because both droids are yellow and have the same stripes on their face. This didn’t bug anyone afterward since they got him, a pilot and a Y wing.
Since this droid originated as a toy and not a figure, I would give him a 10/10 rating.

There’s always a beginning in a toy range. R2-D2 introduced the astromech toy line, R3-T7 introduced the r3 toys cast, r4-M9 introduced the r4 toy cast, r5-D4 brought a better cast for the r5 and r4-g9 brought a better feature for the r2 and r4 toys. But this droid introduced the “build a droid” or “droid factory” toy range. Some like it because you can take the droid apart, but others dislike it due to all the different packages one has to go through just to complete them.
Every droid is unique in their own way. But r2-L3 is mostly recognized due to his unusual livery. A pattern that even hasbro said that was difficult to paint on its toy. If you ask me, it was the best option to start off the set, rather than to focus on droids that already have a toy, the build up droid heavily focused on droids that haven’t received a toy. With the exception of other droids, such as R2-D2, R5-D4, R2-B1, R2-R9 and R3-A2.
For now, I’m still looking for his legs, so someday, I will finish him.
If I were to rate this droid, I’d give him a 10/10 due to his unique design and for being the idea of bringing more background toys into the set.

R2-Q5
Type - R2 unit
Team - empire
Color - black with bronce and silver
Number in my line - #10
Year made - 2000
Year I got it - 2017
Movie
- Episode V the empire strikes back (likely cameo)
- Episode VI return of the Jedi
- Star Wars battlefront II
Droid allies
- R2-A1
- R4-I9
- R5-A1
- R5-J2
Bio card: R2 units specialize in starship diagnostics and repairs. However, Imperial designers consider astromechs to be unneccesary weight for their short range TIE fighters. On the second Death Star, R2-Q5 helps maintain the station's elaborate weapons and security systems, and also services all TIE fighters and bombers.
It’s unusual that the droids on the first Death Star were given a lot of colorful livery. There was only one black astromech droid on episode 4, seen at yavin 4. It wasn’t until episode 5 that the empire had their droids in black livery. One of these droids was named R2-Q5. what’s also unusual is that on his bio card, it listed R4-I9 as his ally. This means that this droid was onboard the first Death Star, seeing that it was the location R4-I9 was working. Another thing to point out is that like R5-J2, R2-Q5 was destroyed on the second Death Star, but was later salvaged as he too is seen at battlefront II story mode.
If I were to rate this droid, I’d give him a 10/10 due to it’s unusual livery and for it being the first empire droid to get a toy.
I actually call this trio as the “dark times trio” mostly because at the time I got them, I was losing interest in Star Wars and because I rarely had luck finding more droids.
This marks the end of the “trio” droid line, as those that are coming afterwards are less or more than 3. So next time, I’ll be talking about R4-P17 and R2-R9. A red duo that I’ve been searching for years.
All astromech droids action figures are owned by me.
