Description
species name: Noctuvenandi aquanantiae {night hunter that swims in water}
common name: Yimru
ancestor: black rat BIO: Habitat: Yimru prefer temperate-to-warm, humid climates with lakes and rivers. Their habitat must have plenty of vegetation and abundant aquatic prey. These nocturnal rats prefer quieter sections of metropolia, although they can sometimes be spotted closer to the bright lights of the nighttime city. Diet: these rats feed exclusively on meat, their diet composed of snails, frogs, eggs, insects, and small fish. They hunt all together, coming up for air and diving back down every few minutes.
Reproduction: Yimru live in small packs composed of up to three family units {a mated pair and their offspring.} Yimru are monogamous and form strong pair bonds. About one to five babies are born a year and they have life spans of up to seven years. Nests are constructed of mats of floating vegetation anchored in the centers of shallow waters. For the first week or two the altricial babies are brought food from their parents, but as they get older the mom will force them into the water to swim. They will still occasionally ride on their parent’s back for protection and transportation.
Adaptations: Yimru are intelligent, adaptable creatures who are capable of solving complex problems. Their back feet are webbed for paddling through water and their long tail acts as a rudder during swimming. Yimru’s fur is water repellent and enhances buoyancy for more efficient swimming. Their whiskers are important sensory organs with which they detect predators and prey {especially in murky waters or during the night.} Tactile, auditory, and olfactory senses are how they interact with the world. Their unwebbed, sensitive hands are used to manipulate objects and grip prey {they are not sapient no do they build their own tools.}
date evolved: 10 Million years
range: yimru live on the western side of Metropolis in the quieter, more remote areas which include waters with plenty of vegetation and prey.
